Reflections on a legendary story. The 1720 Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin is said to be one of the world’s most legendary instruments. Its mysterious history and whereabouts after it went missing for 200 years, has inspired much speculation, and many tellings of its story, including the 1998, Academy Award winning film, The Red Violin. And the story of how it came into the hands of its current owner? It’s just as fascinating. Join us for a performance by world-renowned violin virtuoso, and longtime keeper of The Red Violin, Elizabeth Pitcairn, who, along with her legendary instrument, will lead the ASO Chamber Ensemble in performing captivating arrangements from the now famous movie. This concert will double both as the Season 39 finale, as well as the premiere for ASO’s first-ever international debut, a 10-day concert tour of Poland, where the Symphony will travel with Pitcairn and her Red Violin, performing at some of the country’s most prestigious concert halls and music festivals.

Pianist Marcus Roberts is known throughout the world for his many contributions to the field of jazz music. Credited with the development of a new approach to the jazz trio, he is often hailed as “the genius of the modern piano.” Roberts has won numerous awards over the years, including the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement. His critically-acclaimed legacy of recorded music reflects his tremendous artistic versatility. In addition to his renown as a performer, Roberts is an accomplished composer and arranger. “Why be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?”  Thus said the great French composer when the great American song writer asked him for lessons. Between these two popular pieces, we welcome back the incredible Joyce Yang to perform Samuel Barber’s titanic Piano Concerto. This cinematic and passionate work is a true American masterpiece.

16-time Grammy Award-winner Béla Fleck joins the CSO for a celebration of the American sound. Fleck’s reimagining of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue pays homage to the legendary composer while redefining an all-time classic. Contemporaries Florence Price and Aaron Copland did the same in their time, shaping, contextualizing and creating indelible music that feels like it was always here. Copland’s ballet music to Rodeo, featuring the rip-roaring and instantly recognizable "Hoe-Down," became a new soundtrack to the American West. Florence Price, merging traditional African American themes with the latest music of her day, established a singular voice all her own.

The intrepid orchestral ensemble The Knights continues their multi-year Rhapsody commissioning project, inspired by the Rhapsody in Blue centennial. They invite several of today’s most visionary composers to create an original rhapsody, which artistic directors Colin and Eric Jacobsen describe as “one of the most ecstatically joyful expressions of art ... [a] combination of virtuosity, improvisation, and unfettered imagination.” In this program, pianist and master improviser Aaron Diehl joins The Knights, conducted by Eric Jacobsen, in a world premiere by Michael Schachter, a new suite of music by Keith Jarrett as arranged by Michael P. Atkinson, and the rhapsodic Gershwin masterpiece. The orchestra also treats audiences to Beethoven’s exhilarating Fourth Symphony.

He is driven to program and write music that directly addresses aspects of the human experience and is an active and intentional supporter of diverse voices in the future of concert music.
