Saxophonist, composer and bandleader Emma Rawicz continues to relish the challenge of writing for and leading a big band. Formed in 2023, the Emma Rawicz Jazz Orchestra (ERJO) has quickly become a fixture in her busy schedule, selling out shows at Ronnie Scott’s and other London venues, as well as appearing at major jazz festivals across the UK. Bringing together a 20-piece ensemble of established figures and some of the most exciting young musicians on the scene, ERJO showcases the full breadth of Rawicz’s distinctive writing. Expect everything from edgy, high-energy originals and Afro-Cuban-inspired rhythms to ballads, with Rawicz featuring as a soloist throughout the evening.

INKYRA are a new band that fuse rock energy, fusion, and singer‑songwriter lyricism within a contemporary jazz framework. UK heavyweights, the group’s six members Gareth Lockrane, David Preston, Scottie Thompson, Kevin Glasgow and Jamie Murray bring a wealth of experience from the jazz scene, each contributing a distinct musical personality that shapes the ensemble’s collective voice.

British saxophonist Emma Rawicz has established herself as one of Europe’s most exciting jazz names in record time. She is the recipient of the 2021 Drake Yolanda Prize, named “Best New Talent” at the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician and selected as BBC 3 New Generation Artist 2024. Her music unites inspirations from around the world and moves effortlessly between Afro-Cuban grooves, modern swing, funky vibes and lyrical ballads.

‘If I could wish for anything, it would be an evening with different young jazz musicians From different countries. There are some people who are just incredibly interesting,’ said Jakob Manz in the preliminary talks for his jazz residency. And indeed, some of the most promising young jazz musicians from Europe are coming together here, including the Franco-Algerian cellist Nesrine and the Malian balafon artist Aly Keïta. ‘The two of them simply allow me to present jazz in completely different sound colours. You wouldn't believe the rhythmic possibilities that are totally surprising to our ears in Europe,’ explains Manz, who was also inspired for this evening by concert tours to Haiti and La Reunion. He continues: ‘This will be an evening full of fresh, energetic jazz and interesting constellations on stage. They all have completely different backgrounds and bring many musical influences with them - that's super exciting, and I really want to show that!’

The title Tenor Madness might suggest magnificent singing. Far from it! This concert features two outstanding European tenor saxophonists and their all-star bands: British musician Emma Rawicz, who describes herself as a “noise architect,” sees colours when she hears music. This translates into a playing style rich in sonic nuances. Norwegian Marius Neset is known for his virtuosic technique and creative improvisations, and with his small ensemble he conjures a fireworks display of orchestral colours. An evening that showcases the full tonal spectrum of the tenor saxophone.

"What a force of modern jazz," was the reaction of the jazz experts from WDR. Already hailed as a new star in her early twenties, the young saxophonist from England electrifies her performances with such energy that it almost blows the audience off their seats. That's not to say that Emma Rawicz doesn't have delicate tones. Visiting Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the first time, she will present her compositions from the album "Chroma."

When Haggai Cohen-Milo describes his approach to creatively engaging with works of concert literature from the perspective of a jazz musician, it is flying objects in space that spring to mind. When exploring the work, he feels like a spaceship that is attracted to the moon - the work - and accelerates further as a result, and finally overcomes the gravitational forces through targeted counter-steering, shoots past it and can explore new worlds: worlds that lie beyond it.
