Only those who renounce love can harness the golden ring’s power. Das Rheingold, the opening of Richard Wagner’s monumental cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, launches a dark tale of power and its abuse, love and intrigue. Wagner’s music depicts the dramatic action as vividly as it does the protagnoists’ inner conflicts. With a staged performance of Das Rheingold, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko open the Salzburg Easter Festival; a concert performance of the work at the Philharmonie Berlin follows. Christian Gerhaher makes his role debut as Wotan, the troubled god in charge.

The court of the Duke of Mantua is host to lavish parties. But in this society, having fun means humiliating and degrading others, and the most cynical joker of all is Rigoletto. He wants to protect his daughter Gilda from the corrupt world, so he locks her away. But the young woman goes her own way. Together with «Il trovatore» and «La traviata», «Rigoletto» cemented Verdi’s international fame as an opera composer. The opera is gripping theater in which all roles are ideally cast: from the king to the avenger, from the lover to the murderer.

In Das Rheingold, the “eve” of Richard Wagner’s operatic tetralogy, Der Ring des Nibelungen, the course is set for the apocalypse. It will be unleashed by two entirely opposing worldviews exploding into one another. The tragedy of Alberich, who, being mortal, believes he must take everything within his own lifetime. And the drama of Wotan, who in his, real or illusory, immortality must recognise the emptiness and sameness of being eternal.
