Johann Strauss composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas over the course of his life—not for nothing is he nicknamed the "Waltz King." But he not only composed dance pieces; he also wrote thrilling operettas for the stage, including "Die Fledermaus." To mark his 200th birthday, the program includes waltzes and arias from the popular operetta, as well as other works with dance-like, celebratory verve by Alexander von Zemlinsky and Richard Strauss. Accompanied by a magnificent fireworks display, Vinzenz Praxmarer and the Divertimento Viennese Orchestra will transform the lakeside palace of Monrepos into an atmospheric, expansive Viennese ball scene of the fin-de-siècle.

Finding no peace in the world hereafter, Guercœur wishes himself back to earth – to his great love Giselle and his people, who he led to freedom ...

Four deities, Vérité, Bonté, Beauté and Souffrance grant Guercœur’s wish to return to earth, but the world’s moved on: Giselle, who promised to be true to him forever, is having an affair with Guercœur’s pupil Heurtal, who’s kissed goodbye to the ideals of freedom and love and turned into a dictator. The starving populace is divided, resulting in violent riots which threaten the foundations of the fledgling democracy.

When the Norns weave the thread of fate at the beginning of Richard Wagner's "Götterdämmerung," the end of the world of the gods is already certain. The hero Siegfried falls victim to an intrigue at the court of the Gibichungs, and Brünnhilde resolves to return the Ring to the Rhinemaidens. The male principle, in its insane quest for power and dominance, has destroyed itself. Only the female can oppose the impending apocalypse and develop the saving power for a new beginning. In the final part of "The Ring of the Nibelung," Richard Wagner takes up the major threads of the tetralogy once again and combines them into an apotheosis. In Willy Decker's production of Richard Wagner's drama of humanity, everything is "theater within the theater," and so the abdicated god Wotan lets the curtain fall at the end.
