When Salome had its world premiere in 1905, it marked the beginning of Richard Strauss’ operatic successes. Based on Oscar Wilde’s sensational tragedy, Strauss composed a musical drama rife with unleashed passion, whose worldwide success not even prudish censors could stop. Using one of the most scandalous stories in cultural history, whose origins lie in the New Testament, Strauss created a musical and stunning psychological profile of the unconscious, laying bare the conflict between sensuality and asceticism, between intoxication and loneliness, power and love.

One of the most touching fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm is forever associated with the Christmas season thanks to the musical setting by Engelbert Humperdinck: »Hansel and Gretel«. The fairy tale opera premiered shortly before Christmas in 1893 at the Weimar Court Theatre under Richard Strauss. Several fairy tales inspired Maurice Ravel to compose, which he brought together in his ballet music »Ma mère l'oye«. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, in turn, used ETA Hoffmann's story of the »Mouse King and the Nutcracker« as the basis for his ballet »The Nutcracker«. Experience concert poet Timo Brunke with specially written "Nutcracker Poetry" for the whole family.

The choreographic language and legacy of Uwe Scholz is internationally recognized and undoubtedly legendary. As choreographer and ballet director from 1991 until his death in 2004, he was instrumental in shaping the program and identity of the Leipzig Ballet to this day.

Scholz Symphonies

The International Meistersinger Academy (IMA) not only offers outstanding singers excellent study opportunities but also paves the way for them to pursue a career. Under the artistic direction of Edith Wiens, the IMA will celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2026. Alumni of the academy will perform in the gala concert under the direction of Matthias Foremny.
