Verdi's most frequently performed opera, about the life, love, suffering, and death of a courtesan in 19th-century Paris, strikes a chord deep within. Violetta Valéry lives in the luxury of being kept by courtesans, but she is suffering from tuberculosis. Only Alfredo Germont, for whose love Violetta ultimately abandons her old life, notices. But the past catches up with Violetta: Alfredo's father demands that she break up with his son to save the family honor. She submits to his will and leaves Alfredo. Only in the hour of her death are the two lovers reunited. Too late, of course. Verdi's Traviata—the one who has strayed from the straight and narrow—is a woman who was misunderstood by the society of her time, and whose fate Verdi immortalizes in music of sublime beauty.

Scotland in the 17th century: Lucia Ashton loves Edgardo, a member of the rival Ravenswood family. After a change of power, her brother Enrico finds himself on the wrong side: only Lucia's marriage to the nobleman Arturo can save him from losing his power and his life. The wedding is performed under duress. But the guests are treated to a scene of horror when Lucia emerges from the bridal chamber covered in blood: she has stabbed her husband.

Even the names of the characters sound magical and remind us of our first visits to the opera: Tamino, Pamina, Papageno, Sarastro … Hardly any other work of opera literature includes so many contradictory elements, so harmoniously combined into a coherent entity by Mozart's music . Is his arguably most popular opera an adventure story about growing up? A parable of wisdom, philosophy and friendship? Is it simply about staying true to oneself, like the bird catcher Papageno? He accompanies Prince Tamino, who has fallen in love with a picture of the kidnapped Pamina and plans to free her. We are reminded that the world cannot always be divided into good and evil: the Queen of the Night and Sarastro illustrate this to us through their quarrel over Pamina. On our journey we are also accompanied by three ladies, three boys, a glockenspiel, and a flute that tames even the wildest animals.
