Even if it starts with the folk-song text "To wander is the miller’s delight," Schubert's cycle Die schöne Müllerin is not a collection of innocuous  traditional songs. Instead, we have before us possibly the most beautiful early Romantic opera, albeit in miniature format. A man breaks down because of unrequited love. This octet version combining string quartet, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, and horn, an ensemble invented by Schubert, paints the existential drama in even more vivid colors.

In order to free her husband Florestan, Leonore disguises herself as a male prison guard and sneaks into a prison. Beethoven’s only opera is infused with an unwavering belief in the power of hope. The powerful liberation music at the end anticipates the «Ode to Joy» from his Ninth Symphony. Andreas Homoki separates the plot from its bourgeois comic light opera context, focusing instead on the utopian idea of world brotherhood and the universal themes of humanity that Beethoven chose as his central focus. Klaus Florian Vogt, one of the most outstanding tenors of our time, will appear as Florestan.

Elsa of Brabant is suspected of having killed her younger brother Gottfried in the forest. When King Henry the Fowler asks Elsa to defend herself, she pleads for an imaginary knight to come to her aid. Suddenly, Lohengrin, the Knight of the Swan, appears. He promises to fight for Elsa, but makes her promise beforehand never to question him about his identity or provenance.

This completes Sir David McVicar's directorial vision, which returns the Ring to its mythical foundations and narrative linearity, rightfully placing it among the benchmarks of the Western canon. Ancient tragedy, Baroque theater, and Elizabethan drama converge in a reading that identifies two episodes of comedy— Rheingold and Siegfried —and two episodes of tragedy, Die Walküre and, above all, Götterdämmerung , which marks the final arrival at catastrophe.

The third episode of the Tetralogy introduces the character of Siegfried, the son of siblings Siegmund and Sieglinde, who grew up in the lair of the treacherous Mime and was called upon to reforge the sword Nothung with which he would slay the dragon Fafner, guardian of the treasure, before freeing Brünnhilde from the spell of fire. A young man unfamiliar with fear, he is the protagonist of a fairytale plot that recurs with the sentiment of Nature and the obstacles to be overcome, culminating in his encounter with the Valkyrie, who renounces her divine nature for him.

Repelled by the dispassion of the Wartburg society of minnesingers, Tannhäuser, a singer-knight, removes to the interior of the Venusberg in search of fulfilment. Eventually his longing for Elisabeth leads him to leave again. Back at the Wartburg castle, Tannhäuser takes part in a singing contest whose theme is the nature of love, but when he sings that love is ideally about sensual satisfaction, he is cast out and sent to Rome to seek papal absolution. He returns from Rome without the hoped-for indulgence and resolves to return to the Venusberg. Then a miracle occurs and he finds redemption after all.

When Richard Wagner developed his initial ideas for Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in the mid-1840s, he had no intention of writing a monumental "festive opera". The work was intended to be a facile comedy, a jovial and humorous satyr play to place alongside his Tannhäuser, since – like Tannhäuser – reflections on art and artists are its focus. More than two decades later, he had a musical score that was one of the most extensive and multi-layered of his entire repertoire, and that aroused controversy.
