Following the acclaimed performances of Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony, Nicola Luisotti returns to the podium of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart, with whom he has worked closely since his debut in 2001. In the Fantasy Overture Romeo and Juliet at the beginning of the concert, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky brings together the contrasting worlds of Shakespeare's tragedy with shimmering romantic colours: the hatred of the hostile Capuleti and Montecchi families and the infinite longing of the young lovers. Deeply rooted in the language of romanticism is the Italian Nino Rota, who became known above all for his film music, such as that for Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather.

In his first staging of a music theatre, Eric Gauthier explores the reasons why and how people celebrate. Together with singers, dancers, choir and orchestra, the audience journeys through the various kinds of a lifetime’s festivities. On the playlist: two centuries of vocal and dance music, including unheard rarities.
