Continuing the BSO's exploration of Caribbean stories and music, the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra makes its Symphony Hall debut under the direction of Maximiano Valdés. One of three non-BSO orchestras featured this season, their performance highlights the vibrant musical traditions of Puerto Rico and beyond. This concert is part of our E Pluribus Unum: From Many, One exploration, honoring the diverse voices that shape our nation’s musical heritage, and will include works by Angélica Negrón, Roberto Sierra, and a selection of Puerto Rico’s rich popular musical traditions.

Frequent guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk leads this celebration of Caribbean composers, beginning with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Cuban American Tania León’s BSO-commissioned Time to Time, whose title reveals the composer’s characteristic preoccupation with duration and rhythm. Puerto Rico-born Roberto Sierra wrote his effervescent, jazz- and Latin-tinged concerto especially for James Carter’s lyricism and technical prowess on both soprano and tenor sax. Johannes Brahms’ Second Symphony is considered among his warmest, most pastoral works.

Under the direction of guest conductor Maximiano Valdés, The Santa Fe Symphony presents percussionist Svet Stoyanov in the local debut of Emmanuel Séjourné’s jazz-inspired Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra. Critics across the U.S. are raving about Stoyanov’s virtuosity on the marimba, calling him inspired and a driving force in the world of modern percussion.

Summer, energy, passion – Gustavo Dudamel and the Berliner Philharmoniker invite you to a end-of-season concert at the Waldbühne. The Venezuelan conductor performed at this venue back in 2008 under the motto Los ritmos de la noche. It was his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker, and was met with great acclaim by the audience. Dudamel now celebrates the end of the season with the orchestra in the open air for the fourth time. The programme will include rousing dances from Bernstein’s musical West Side Story, in which Latin American sounds and rhythms are all-pervasive.

There’s rhythm in the air, and it’s not just confined to Roberto Sierra’s toe-tapping Fandangos. It’s the driving force behind the nostalgic melodies of Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances – the sound of a Russian composer stranded in Centerport, New York, and amid the freeways and palm trees of 1940s California. In between, Pablo Ferrández summons up the quiet power and deep poetry of Elgar’s hugely popular Cello Concerto. “A star in the making” says one critic: we say he’s already up there!

JP Jofre, one of the world’s leading performers of the bandoneón—the Latin American version of the accordion—joins us for Astor Piazzolla’s Concerto for Bandoneón, “Aconcagua.” We are also honored to have a special appearance by Latin GRAMMY®-nominated composer and musician Miguel del Águila playing the conga on his popular Conga, a not-to-be-missed performance! This exciting afternoon of great music also presents Roberto Sierra’s brilliant Symphony No. 3, “La Salsa” and Ariel Ramírez’ Misa Criolla, with a side-by-side performance with The Santa Fe Symphony Youth Symphony Orchestra, plus appearances by local guitarists and percussionists.

The journey culminates with Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, “The Great,” an expansive work that traverses through joy, despair, and triumphant optimism. This concert is a testament to the power of music to encapsulate the breadth of human emotion, offering a space for reflection, solace, and exhilaration.

Bach’s Double Violin Concerto is a family affair featuring BPO concertmaster Nikki Chooi and his equally virtuosic brother, Timothy Chooi, in an energetic exchange of musical one-up-man-ship. Timothy solos on Prokofiev’s lyrical and romantic Violin Concerto No. 1, and the BPO performs the beautifully melodic Third Symphony of Brahms. Venezuelan conductor Domingo Hindoyan makes his BSO debut leading the American premiere of Roberto Sierra’s Symphony No. 6, a BSO co-commission. Also making his BSO debut is Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández in Edward Elgar’s regal and impassioned Cello Concerto, often interpreted as a profound reaction to the First World War. One of the repertoire’s greatest symphonies, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s darkly majestic Symphony No. 7 exudes his love for his native Bohemia as well as the influence of his mentor, Johannes Brahms.

You will be dancing in your seat from the first note to the last as you listen to Domingo Hindoyan conduct the Minnesota Orchestra with guest trumpet soloist Pacho Flores. In Arturo Márquez’s new trumpet concerto, Flores delivers the many colors and flavors of Latin American dance bands while he performs on four different types of trumpets. These concerts conclude with Dvořák’s radiant Eighth Symphony, interwoven with a multitude of folksongs and delightful dance melodies.

THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT is an ongoing series of 81 commissions for cello, celebrating a rich tapestry of distinct and diverse compositional palettes. Each composer has been asked to respond to two paintings, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera (c.1480) and Charline von Heyl’s Primavera 2020. This three-day residency at the Barge offers a curated survey divided into three thematic programs, featuring 17 works heard for the first time in NYC and world premieres by Tyshawn Sorey, Texu Kim, Layale Chaker, Analia Llugdar, and Aaron Jay Kernis. Works by Josquin des Prez and J.S. Bach offer a musical grounding through the centuries.

An American masterpiece, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story tells of cultures colliding, a theme that plays out across this program. Declared by Mahler himself to be “the start of modern music,” Chabrier’s España is paired with Lalo’s rhapsodic Cello Concerto to make up the first half of the program. The first American in four decades and youngest musician ever to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition Cello Division, Zlatomir Fung, joins the RPO as soloist. Roberto Sierra’s colorful Fandangos, a rhythmic piece inspired by the triple meter Spanish dance, follows the Bernstein to end the lively evening.

Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning Nicaraguan conductor Giancarlo Guerrero leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in a south-of-the-border immersion, packing plenty of heat into a fusion of Afro-Caribbean, Central and South American traditions, including the tango-infused Sinfonía Buenos Aires. The renowned Venezuelan soloist Pacho Flores dips into Mexico's rich trumpet-playing tradition for a piece written by him and for him by Arturo Márquez.
