Verdi: Requiem Mass / Riccardo Chailly

Teatro alla Scala

“How can I explain to you the sweetest, indefinable, new sensation aroused in me by the presence of that Saint, as you call him? I would have knelt before him if one could adore men. They say one shouldn't, even though we venerate on our altars so many who lacked Manzoni's talent or virtue, and who were, in fact, the very best of scoundrels! When you see him, kiss his hand for me and tell him how much I adore him. Tell him everything your deepest admiration can suggest, and I will never be able to say it. It's strange; I was once very shy, but I am no longer; but before Manzoni I feel so small (and note well that I am as proud as Lucifer) that I never, or almost never, find the words.” Thus, Verdi, in a letter addressed to Clarina Maffei on July 7, 1868, described his first meeting with Manzoni, for whom he harbored a feeling of veneration. Moreover, the composer from Busseto, in another letter, also addressed to Clarina Maffei, on May 24, 1867, had defined The Betrothed as "not only the greatest book of our time, but one of the greatest books ever to come from the human mind. And it is not just a book, but a consolation for humanity. I was sixteen when I read it for the first time. Since then, I have read many others, on which, rereading, advanced age has modified or erased […] the judgments of my youth; but for that book, my enthusiasm remains the same; indeed, as I have come to know men better, it has grown."
