Venus or Elisabeth? Eroticism or love of God? Poor knight Tannhäuser simply cannot decide, and although everyone shouts "Hallelujah!" at the end of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser , the hero finds no peace. His only option is death. The folk poetry on which Wagner's opera is based has one of the most torn heroes in literary history, and the two seductive poles between which he moves form the framework of this concert with arrangements for two pianos. Yaara Tal and Andreas Groethuysen begin with a lot of Bach. Mozart's C minor Fantasy KV 475 and Sonata facile (which, by the way, is not at all easy to play) create an ideal transition to Wagner's famous Bacchanale because they are heavenly and earthly; and to one of the most beautiful deaths in music history. In his arrangement of Isolde's Liebestod, Max Reger dispenses with all opulence - and thus gives the heroine's farewell to life, love and sensuality a touch of comforting peace of mind.
