Be transported to the landscapes of southern Spain with vivacious, dance-inspired works by Falla and Chabrier. The journey begins in Riccardo Muti’s native Italy with a boisterous overture by Donizetti and sumptuous ballet music by Verdi. Golijov’s Megalopolis Suite features music from his score to the 2024 release of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic film, in which the fate of Ancient Rome haunts a modern world.

The Irish mezzo studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin under Veronica Dunne before moving on to the Opera Studio at the Bavarian State Opera from 2016 to 2018. She is a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist for 2023-5, during which time she will debut at major recital venues including Wigmore Hall. She recently sang Wellgunde in Barrie Kosky’s new production of Das Rheingold at the Royal Opera House and will make her role debut as Carmen at the 2024 Buxton Festival. Her programme takes an avian theme.

While known for his loyalty to composers from his native Russia, Balanchine also displayed a deep affection for French music, as the dances in this program illustrate. The rarely seen Bourrée Fantasque, set to the music of Chabrier, includes romping comedy in the first movement and a blazing finale for the corps de ballet. Errante, originally titled Tzigane after the name of Ravel’s rhapsodic score and last revived for the 1993 Balanchine Celebration, returns in a staging by Suzanne Farrell, for whom it was choreographed in 1975. The evening also includes two disparate dances to Bizet scores: the animated pas de deux The Steadfast Tin Soldier, with its fairy-tale characters who spring to life, and Symphony in C, one of Balanchine’s most brilliant and cherished displays of the variety of classical style.

La Mer: an endless source of inspiration for artists from Claude Debussy to Charles Trenet. It really doesn’t have to be the Côte d’Azur or the Mediterranean coasts. Ostend was Europe’s leading seaside town in the late 19th century. A place where you could enjoy sun, sea and beach. Where one could parade among the beau monde. Where you could simultaneously listen and be seen at the Kursaal’s renowned concerts and recitals. They had the very greatest conductors and composers on the rostrum and the largest stars in classical music were visiting… and one James Sidney Edouard Ensor was in the loyal audience. The quirky painter was a loyal guest at the Théâtre Royale d’Ostende.

Curiously, it’s often been French composers who’ve expressed Spain’s essence, as in Chabrier’s España, inspired by folk musicians he heard there on holiday. Bizet showed similar flair in his opera, Carmen, the colourful Suite No.1 concluding with the famous Toreadors’ March. But to capture the country’s soul, turn to a Spaniard: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by an always welcome Hallé guest, guitarist Craig Ogden.

Bourrée Fantasque, which debuted in 1949 and has only rarely been revived in recent years, returns to the repertory and is sure to charm audiences with its vibrant mixture of frolicsome comedy in the first movement and sparkling classical choreography throughout. Agon, a dance both austere in its means and sublimely powerful in its effect, marked a watershed in the storied collaboration between Balanchine and Stravinsky. And Slaughter on Tenth Avenue represents Balanchine as a supreme entertainer, with its deliciously zany story of a murder plot that goes awry, thanks to a high-kicking stripper and the fearlessly energetic hoofer who loves her.

An American masterpiece, Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story tells of cultures colliding, a theme that plays out across this program. Declared by Mahler himself to be “the start of modern music,” Chabrier’s España is paired with Lalo’s rhapsodic Cello Concerto to make up the first half of the program. The first American in four decades and youngest musician ever to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition Cello Division, Zlatomir Fung, joins the RPO as soloist. Roberto Sierra’s colorful Fandangos, a rhythmic piece inspired by the triple meter Spanish dance, follows the Bernstein to end the lively evening.

The opening of our season will celebrate the rich history of Russian ballet. We will be joined by dancers from The Juilliard School to bring to life famous scenes from some of the world’s most popular ballets. In addition, MSO will be partnering with the Mobile Museum of Art to bring you art inspired by Ballet Russes which will be presented by projection during the performance.
Most of the pieces on this concert were premiered by or composed for the ballet company, Ballet Russes. In 1909, Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev founded this company in Paris. Though most of the dancers, choreographers, and composers were Russian, the company never performed in Russia because of the tumultuous political climate. His company represents the Golden Age of ballet which not only revived a dying art form but also inspired a new movement of exploration for fine arts as a whole.

In disguise, whilst searching for his next victim, King Ouf encounters Lazuli who is heartbroken over a lost love.  After a heated exchange, the king sentences Lazuli to death only to be thwarted by the royal astrologer Siroco, whose predictions reveal Lazuli’s fate is closely linked to the king’s own mortality.  Consequently, Lazuli is spared and lavished with luxuries, but remains closely watched as he plots to win the heart of Laoula, the woman he loves.

Chabrier: L’étoile

Step into the eccentric and quirky world of Emmanuel Chabrier’s L’étoile, an opéra bouffe bursting with wit, satire, and fantastical music.  First performed in 1877, this opera unfolds in a fictional kingdom where King Ouf I, notorious for celebrating his birthday with a public execution, meets his match in the spirited peddler Lazuli.

All Visiting Orchestras tickets include same-day admission to The Baker Museum. Museum hours on days of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performances: 10am-7:30pm. In addition, the doors to Hayes Hall will open 90 minutes prior to this performance. Arrive early to enjoy the exhibitions and light fare available at Heidi's Place.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the death of legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía. This concert pays tribute, featuring a piece that became one of his most iconic recordings: Joaquín Rodrigo’s El Concierto de Aranjuez. There’s music by eminent Spanish composers including Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz and Francisco Tarrega, as well as music that takes inspiration from Spanish culture, including an aria from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen and the overture to Gioacchino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant rhythms and passionate melodies of Flamenco with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec's enchanting concert series. This spellbinding event will take place at the Grand Théâtre de Québec, featuring two performances: the evening show on May 28, 2025, at 8:00 PM, and a matinee on May 29, 2025, at 10:30 AM. Under the baton of Clemens Schuldt, the concert will showcase the extraordinary talents of María Toledo, the new face of contemporary Flamenco singing, and Caroline Planté, a masterful Flamenco guitarist. The program promises a journey from Spain to the Orient, exploring the theme of feminine seduction through pieces like Chabrier's España, de Falla's El amor brujo, and Rimski-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Each piece will be brought to life with the unique flair and deep emotional resonance that only Flamenco can provide.

Before the Wednesday evening concert, attendees are invited to join Clemens Schuldt at 7:00 PM for preludes, offering insights into the creative process and historical context of the music. This is followed by preconcert performances featuring emerging musicians from the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and the Faculté de musique de l’Université Laval.

Thursday morning's concert begins with a welcoming coffee and pastry courtesy of Chartwell, residences for retirees, at 9:00 AM. At 9:30 AM, a casual chat with an orchestra musician will reveal the highlights of their career and the secrets of their instrument, setting the stage for a morning of captivating music.
