Great Voices is a concert series initiated in the 2025/26 season by Boris Kudlička , the new director of the Grand Theatre - National Opera. It will feature an elite group of Polish opera singers of international renown, who have had the opportunity to invite international artists to collaborate with them. The opening performance will feature Aleksandra Kurzak and Robert Alagna in a duet, followed by Artur Ruciński and Prette Yende in February, Tomasz Konieczny and Camilla Nylund in April, and Piotr Beczała in May.

Verdi was a leading Italian composer of opera in the 19th century, noted for operas such as Rigoletto (1851), Il trovatore (1853), La traviata (1853), Don Carlos (1867), Aida (1871), Otello (1887), and Falstaff (1893) and for his Requiem Mass (1874). Mann will illuminate the artistic and musical imagination of this profound man whose vision not only changed opera forever but also brought the Italian people together and helped fuel the Risorgimento, the unification and independence of Italy.

The opera "Aida" by Giuseppe Verdi is not only set in Egypt and premiered in Cairo, but throughout the history of its origin it is closely linked to the country on the Nile and its viceroy, the Khedive Ismael Pasha. The grandest of grand opera is back on the NHCC stage. Michelle Johnson (Turandot 2023 and Lohengrin 2019) returns in the title role, alongside Olivia Vote (Verdi’s Requiem 2025 & Norma 2018 ) as Amneris, Dane Suarez makes his company debut as Radames, OSW favorite Matt Hanscom returns as Amonasro. This new production promises vocal fireworks, stirring choruses, and unforgettable theatrical moments.

Aida is a slave at the Egyptian court. She is the king’s daughter from the enemy country of Ethiopia but has fallen in love with the Egyptian military leader Radamès. Her father Amonasro uses her to learn about the military strategy of his adversaries. Meanwhile, Amneris, the Egyptian king’s daughter, uses everything in her power to fight for her love for Radamès and tries to kill her rival. Everyone is at the mercy of a ruthless cartel of priests and warriors.

Beyond its apparent grandeur, Aida is above all a drama of the intimate, a love triangle between Amneris, a woman of power; Aida, the dominated foreigner; and Radamès, torn between glory, patriotic duty, and forbidden love. The opera explores attachment to the land, uprooting, and the dream of elsewhere.

In this contemporary reinterpretation, the figures of Ramfis and Amonasro merge into a single, two-faced character: "The Man in the Shadows," the embodiment of the forces that crush human passions. The production relies on four singers and three musicians, including an electronic musician, blending original vocal lines with contemporary sonic influences for an Aida that is both faithful to Verdi and resolutely modern.
