Inside the Music

Dvořák’s In Nature’s Realm unfolds from a hushed orchestral murmur into a glowing soundscape inspired by the forests and meadows of the composer’s Bohemian homeland — music of warmth, lyricism, and quiet wonder. While not the best known of Dvořák’s works, In Nature’s Realm showcases great rhythm and melodies, a thrilling experience for our musicians and the audience.

Houston favorite Augustin Hadelich returns for one of the most treasured works in all of music, Tchaikovsky’s lushly romantic (and dizzyingly difficult) Violin Concerto. Be transported to a world of soaring beauty and limitless possibility in Jennifer Higdon’s blue cathedral, which, in Higdon’s words, represents an imaginary journey “through a glass cathedral in the sky.” Then, fasten your seatbelts and blast off to menacing Mars, jolly Jupiter, and beyond as the Symphony performs Holst’s sonic, celestial showpiece, The Planets.

The season closes in a dramatic and triumphant fashion with some of the greatest classical music ever written. Jennifer Higdon’s brief but striking fanfare sets the tone before Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto opens with a commanding, majestic flourish, instantly igniting a sense of awe. After a moment of lyrical reverie that seems to suspend time, the music propels forward with irrepressible joy and optimism. In contrast, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 delves deep into the human experience, embodying the struggle between fate and the quest for happiness. From its powerful brass fanfare—fate’s ominous call—to the electrifying energy of the finale, the symphony is a deeply cathartic journey through anguish, resilience and eventual exhilaration.

Since forming in 2010, Neave Trio – violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov, and pianist Eri Nakamura – has earned enormous praise for its engaging, cuttingedge performances. WQXR explains, “‘Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making.” The group’s 2019 album Her Voice, on Chandos Records, was named one of the best recordings of the year by both The New York Times and BBC Radio 3. The Boston Musical Intelligencer reports, “it is inconceivable that they will not soon be among the busiest chamber ensembles going,” and “their unanimity, communication, variety of touch, and expressive sensibility rate first tier.”

A bold fusion of music and metaphor, James Syler’s Symphony No. 1 “Blue” is a deeply moving work for soprano, chorus, and wind ensemble—part symphony, part oratorio, and wholly transformative. Structured in five movements and rooted in a narrative text, this choral symphony explores the spiritual arc of a modern soul navigating despair, stillness, revelation, and ultimately, renewal.

Inspired by literary figures such as Joseph Conrad’s Kurtz and the poetic voice of T.S. Eliot, Syler constructs a powerful meditation on inner emptiness and the mysterious process of change. The symphony follows a chiastic form (ABCBA), mirroring a descent into hopelessness and an ascent toward spiritual awakening. Each movement—Impending Blue, Dark Blue, Fading Blue, Still Point Blue, and True Blue—marks a stage in this emotional and philosophical journey.

The world premiere of Rivers Ascending by James Syler is a striking new concerto that reimagines the tuba as a vessel of transformation. Inspired by the metaphor of water rising against gravity, the work explores the tuba’s surprising lyrical and virtuosic range—challenging expectations and defying limitations. Like rivers ascending into steam, the tuba emerges from the depths to soar, sing, and tell a story of renewal and possibility.

We begin this evening's concert with renowned American composer, Jennifer Higdon. Written in 1999, Blue Cathedral was commissioned for the 75th anniversary of the Curtis Institute. Titles of musical compositions are often—most often it can seem—misleading, but this one is singularly apt. Cast in a single short movement of lush, soothing cascades of orchestra sound, the over-used descriptor, “shimmering,” is more than apropos in this case. Imaginative scoring for strings and delicate percussion—including exotic bells and water glasses—are the foundation for an evocation of the atmosphere of the title. Short motives from various wind instruments provide aphoristic commentaries throughout, but generally without what would call “tunes.” The whole weft of sound seems to gently and constantly float upward without having to start all over at the “bottom.” It’s a remarkable and sensual musical experience, and justly deserves its popularity as perhaps the composer’s most performed composition.

Tchaikovsky was full of doubts about what he had poured out in his Fifth Symphony, but he came to love it just as millions of music lovers have since he wrote it. Pulitzer Prize and three-time GRAMMY winning living American composer Jennifer Higdon’s music is described as,“…traditionally rooted, yet imbued with integrity and freshness.” Her evocative orchestral work blue cathedral was composed soon after the passing of her brother, AndrewBlue. Higdon notes, “As I was writing this piece, I found myself imagining a journey through a glass cathedral in the sky….This piece represents the expression of the individual and the group...our inner travels and the places our souls carry us, the lessons we learn, and the growth we experience.” French pianist extraordinaire Jean-Yves Thibaudet will perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto in GMajor. Chicago Classical noted, “Few keyboard artists embody Ravel’s blend of supple elegance and unbridled bravura so naturally and effortlessly.” Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony has an overwhelmingly uplifting, enthusiastic spirit that is steeped in wartime patriotism. Prokofiev indicated this work is, “…very important not only for the musical material that went into it, but also because I was returning to the symphonic form after a break of 16 years. The Fifth Symphony is the culmination of an entire period in my work. I conceived of it as a symphony on the greatness of the human soul.
