Composers Carola Bauckholt and Caspar Johannes Walter are the protagonists of the inaugural dialogue of the Sound of Wonder series. They will present to the audience the key characteristics of their music and the compositional research underlying their aesthetic language. They will do so together with Luca Ieracitano and Paolo Casiraghi, performers of the micro-game homage to Kurtag composed by Bauckholt in 2017.

Sierra’s Avian Mirrors and Doolittle’s Field Guide bring us into the world of birdsong mimicry with a rich interplay between birds, while Bauckholt’s Doppelbelichtung presents photographically accurate transcriptions of bird calls with great intensity. Terranova’s Rainbow Dust in the Sky and Grime’s To see the summer sky take us into the evocative world of birds with msuic that is both ethereal and fierce.

Birds inform us about our environment, marking the seasons and playing their part in nature’s cycles. They inspire us in art, in folklore and in music where bird mimicry has existed worldwide throughout time. In traditional Gaelic culture there are numerous bird mimicry songs which blur the lines between birdsong, music and speech as well as rich bird-related folklore. In these times of ecological crisis, bird numbers are in decline. The tragedy affects the whole cycle and we feel the loss in countless ways.

The 2nd Symphony Concert, entitled "Northern Lights," focuses on composers from Scandinavia: Sweden and Denmark are represented in the program with Wilhelm Stenhammar and Carl Nielsen.

Stenhammar's overture "Excelsior" [German: sublimity, height] is brimming with optimism, never settling, but always striving higher, even to the point of ecstasy.

The first part of the concert begins with a work by this year's Louis Spohr Music Prize winner Carola Bauckholt. "Aus dem Geröll" is a work for percussion and orchestra. Premiered in 2023, Dirk Rothbrust will play the percussion solo today, as he did then.

Balloons are delicate and airy, fun and inviting to play with. But they also have another side; they can pop and make a noise, you can rub them and make them squeak.
