This groundbreaking production, commissioned in a co-production with the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto, is based on Simon Mayo’s best-selling novels, "Itch" and "Itch Rocks." The opera promises an exhilarating blend of an element-hunting thriller with brilliant operatic set pieces and profound emotional depth, featuring a sparkling ensemble cast and a captivating soundworld that speaks of dangerous treasures.

The creative team behind this ambitious project includes Jonathan Dove as the composer, Alasdair Middleton as the librettist, Jessica Cottis as the conductor, alongside a talented cast and crew who bring this thrilling narrative to life. The story follows the adventures of Itchingham Lofte, portrayed by Adam Temple-Smith, and his quest that leads him into a world of danger and discovery.

"Itch" is set to run for a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 30-minute interval, marking a significant addition to the opera landscape with its new production and world premiere at Opera Holland Park. The opera is performed in English with surtitles, accompanied by the City of London Sinfonia, ensuring an accessible and immersive experience for all attendees.

The USC Thornton Opera program and the USC Thornton Chamber Orchestra present Jonathan Dove and April De Angelis’ witty and moving opera, “Flight.” Set in an airport in Great Britain, Flight is based on the true story of a foreign refugee who has escaped his repressive homeland in the wheel-well of a jumbo jet. Trapped in a terminal during a violent rainstorm, the opera explores how every day passengers react to the refugee and his plight.

This performance with her husband, acclaimed collaborative pianist Christopher Cano, and St. Louis Symphony Principal Violist Beth Guterman Chu, features solo pieces, duos, and trios that highlight the eloquence and depth of the modern mid-range.

Tonight’s concert celebrates the clarinet, and the outstanding playing of Mark van de Wiel.  

Mark first performed in the Royal Festival Hall as a member of the National Youth Orchestra, and was the Philharmonia’s Principal Clarinet from 2000 to 2025. He plays a brand new concerto commissioned from his friend Jonathan Dove CBE. Dove’s music often expresses feelings of wonder at the natural world.  His third concerto to feature a soloist scanning the skies (following Stargazer and Northern Lights), Rainbow showcases Mark’s virtuosity and lyricism. 

The celebration continues with Aaron Copland’s glorious Clarinet Concerto, commissioned by jazz legend Benny Goodman. Then Mark hands over to the Philharmonia’s new Principal Clarinet Maura Marinucci for the unmistakable glissando opening of Rhapsody in Blue. On piano, Frank Dupree brings his infectious energy and enthusiasm to Gershwin’s masterpiece.
