The young man in Wilhelm Müller's cycle of poems "The Beautiful Miller's Daughter" is deeply in love, but the story, which begins with butterflies in his stomach, takes an unfortunate turn and ends badly. The poet Wilhelm Müller, however, meant the lyrics to be ironic; we should laugh at the poor miller's boy, his infatuation, jealousy and despair. But then Franz Schubert came along and turned them into music that is so precise, touching and true that you cannot escape it and emotionally experience the whole emotional drama of the unhappily in love man. Schubert's song cycle "The Beautiful Miller's Daughter" is a masterpiece in the interplay of word and music - and the main topic in the written school leaving exam. Experiencing the song cycle as a whole in concert is impressive. And Torsten Müller, bassist in the SWR Vokalensemble and a passionate song interpreter, has worked out an interpretation with his piano partner Andrea Amann that cannot be heard on any recording. But "Fit for the Abitur" offers even more: At the beginning of the concert there is a detailed introduction to the work. In Freiburg this is done by Eva Pobeschin, music editor of SWR Kultur. In Stuttgart there is a staged concert introduction with contributions from prospective high school graduates from the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium.
