Music theatre in a prologue and three acts by Mike Svoboda (music) and Anne-May Krüger (libretto) based on Peter Hacks' comedy of the same name

Adam und Eva

Schlosstheater Schwetzingen

The premiere in Venice in 1709 catapulted the 24-year-old Handel to international stardom as a sensitive explorer of the human psyche and emotional spectrum. Part of the success, beyond the music itself, stems from the ironic tone of the narrative, which recounts a story from Roman history: Emperor Claudius, who has chosen the general Otho as his successor. Unbeknownst to Otho, his scheming wife Agrippina is plotting to install her son Nero, from her first marriage, as heir to the throne – Nero being linked to his rivals Claudius and Otho in their shared desire for the beautiful Poppea.

Premiere: Agrippina

Linz State Theatre

Without resting on the laurels of the sensational success of Hänsel and Gretel, Engelbert Humperdinck elevates the fairy-tale opera to new heights with his setting of Elsa Bernstein's touching and poignant saga of the royal children – and captures the spirit of the times by incorporating the symbolist poetry of Art Nouveau and the still-nascent field of psychoanalysis into the grand stage work. After its premiere at the Met in New York in 1910, The Royal Children was performed worldwide for years before fading from the spotlight. It is time
to bring it back into the cultural consciousness in a lasting way as chief conductor Markus Poschner bids farewell.

Premiere: Königskinder

Brucknerhaus Linz

In his eponymous parable, Bertolt Brecht explores a profound question: Is it more exhausting to be good or to play the villain? As Brecht himself answers, using the example of Shen Te, whose good nature is exploited by everyone, it depends on the prevailing circumstances. Cong Su, who won an Oscar for his score to Bernardo Bertolucci's cinematic hit *The Last Emperor*, has adapted the parable for the opera stage. For its world premiere at the same venue, Brecht specialist and former artistic director of the Linz State Theatre, Stephan Suschke, returns to Linz.
