“Minne” is not just love. The medieval term encompasses much more. It describes different types of human affection as well as the relationship between man and God, and there is probably no one who wrote as many Minnelieder in the latter sense as the Benedictine abbess, mystic, poet, musician, scientist and saint Hildegard of Bingen in the 12th century. The Per-Sonat ensemble, a special troupe for music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, founded and directed by mezzo-soprano Sabine Lutzenberger in 2008, brings together songs by Hildegard with works by the minnesinger Heinrich von Meißen (known as “Frauenlob”), who lived at the turn of the 14th century and was considered the king of the minnesingers, in Speyer Cathedral. The focus of the evening will be Marian songs and musical settings of the biblical Song of Songs, accompanied by fiddle, lutes and bagpipes
