A More Perfect Union illuminates the dreams of our country, honors those who fought for our civil rights, and contemplates the uncertainties facing our nation. Vaughan Williams’ powerful antiwar cantata Dona Nobis Pacem anchors a compelling program that spans Margaret Bonds to contemporary voices such as Shawn Kirchner, Mari Esabel Valverde, Gwyneth Walker, and others. Together, these works confront where we've fallen short and celebrate the stories — some resounding, some quietly persistent — of individuals and communities who have challenged injustice and imagined a better future.

Grace Chorale of Brooklyn’s spring program affirms that democracy is not a static achievement, but a living project — one sustained through the ongoing, intentional work of its citizens. Rather than merely observing where we've been or accepting where we are, A More Perfect Union invites us to envision our path forward to pursue peace, abundance, and the enduring promise of the American dream.

In a long running tradition, the FVSO joins with the Farmington High School Music Department for a collaborative concert, bringing together multiple generations of musicians. Featuring choral works by Faure, Vivaldi and Gwenyth Walker, with the FHS Chamber Choir under the direction of Louise Carrozza. The program concludes with Dvorak’s masterful cello concerto with Lillian Yim, FHS alumna.

The recently formed group made up of students past and present from the Royal Academy of Music quickly established itself by winning the prestigious 2023 Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition, plus a further prize for inventive programming. Two works in this concert, including a world première, are by fellow RAM young composers; James Tavares, meanwhile, is the ensemble’s tuba player.

In a program of music written entirely by living composers, the choruses at UC Davis perform works ideal for intimate concert venues such as the Pitzer Center. The repertoire incorporates many different choral traditions, including American Spirituals (including The Storm is Passing Over arranged by Barbara Baker), Venezuelan folk songs (La Paloma by Cristian Grases), Filipino or Visayan folk songs (Rosas Pandan, arranged by George Hernandez), and modern choral harmonies (as in Marques Garrett’s My Heart Be Brave).

This performance reflects the diversity of the featured composers, including three women (women composers are still a relatively small percentage of the professional composer population), and brings attention to newer orchestral music that extends beyond a typical classical performance.

Celebrate the holidays with music of our community’s traditions. The orchestra opens the concert with Gwyneth Walker’s Symphony of Grace, then is joined by mezzo-soprano Molly Mary Mahoney and tenor David Powell for a Hanukkah Medley, An English Christmas, and holiday classics by Mel Tormé and Irving Berlin. The celebration concludes with David Powell singing Comfort Ye and Every Valley from Handel’s Messiah.

The third WSO concert of the season will be conducted by Adam Fontana. Adam lives in New Paltz and is an assistant professor of music at SUNY New Paltz, where he conducts the Symphonic Band, serves as interim director of the College-Youth Symphony, and teaches courses in music and music education. He holds degrees in music education and conducting from SUNY Potsdam, Columbia University-Teachers College, The Hartt School, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music & Dance. His program includes a new work by Gwyneth Walker titled 'Open the Door' (also the title of this concert), along with the Overture to Mozart's 'The Magic Flute', Mendelssohn's 'Hebrides Overture', and Beethoven's 'Symphony No. 7'.

This concert features three women composers. Valerie Coleman's work was inspired by her travels to a European jazz nightclub. Louise Farrenc, a piano prodigy, wrote this virtuosic piano quintet for the same instrumentation as the Schubert Trout Quintet, adding a double bass into the mix. Gwyneth Walker's Three Songs reflect the lyrical and romantic aspects of E. E. Cummings's writing. The program ends with the stunning and hauntingly beautiful last work of Strauss about the end of days. Cliff Colnot created this new arrangement especially for this world premiere ICA performance.

One of the most popular American compositions is Barber’s hauntingly expressive Adagio for Strings. Of her Craftsbury Trio, Walker writes that she wants to capture the “open and stark landscape with a gentle pace of life” in Craftsbury, Vermont. Pärt’s music can change your life.
