Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony is more than just music. It is an event. »For me, symphony means building a world with all the means of available technology,« said Mahler, and with his Third, he has moulded this aspiration into monumental music that breaks all boundaries. It tells a late Romantic story of creation: nature awakens from its icy torpor, flowers sway in the wind, animals dance in the forest, brass bands herald the arrival of summer, angels sing »Bim Bam«. But death lurks everywhere. At the end, in one of the most poignant finales in music history, the human soul soars to heavenly heights.

When we hear the name Beethoven, huge symphonic clouds and fantastic piano virtuosity pile up in front of us. But we also find the latter in Beethoven’s stage works. For six months, selected school classes work with Beethoven’s overtures, which subtly hint at the events to come on stage. In the final concert, the pupils and the Beethoven Orchester Bonn show what they have created artistically with artists, music teachers and their teachers.

What fascinates people about this music? What makes it special? Why do musicians want to play this music and why do audiences still want to hear it - but others don't?

Numerous composers have cast this ever-changing element into musical forms: from clinking ice, surging waves, and pouring rain to still, deep water and mysterious mist. The Göttingen Symphony Orchestra, together with the Göttingen Youth Symphony Orchestra, embarks on a journey of discovery into the musical world of water. And when the audience takes the plunge and joins in, everything flows.
