Violinist

This season’s Composer-in-Focus, Joe Hisaishi, has established himself as a formidable force in contemporary music for his delicately crafted symphonic and solo works. A passionate champion of similarly experimental artists, Hisaishi brings his MUSIC FUTURE series to the LA Phil, highlighting the works and talents of his notable collaborators such as Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, and Max Richter, as well as his original compositions. The concert will feature chamber performances, and works conducted by former Dudamel Fellow Michelle Di Russo and Hisaishi himself.

This program ends as it begins—with breathtaking string quintets! Mozart’s Third exudes an effortless joy and elegance, weaving playful melodies into lively and refined conversations between the instruments. Composer and LA Phil violist John Hayhurst’s Adagio is rather brief yet comforting, drawing inspiration from the final words of Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, and Michael Lando.

Yi-Wen Jiang’s string quartet arrangements of popular Chinese folk melodies are at the heart of our celebration of the Year of the Horse—a symbol of independence, growth, and free spiritedness in Chinese culture. A dynamic scene of whinnying, galloping equines comes to life as the cello and piano take on an arrangement of Haihuai Huang’s Racing Horses—another folk song originally written for the erhu, a traditional two-stringed instrument from China.

Lunar New Year

When 57-year-old Brahms penned his Second String Quintet, he truly believed that his best work was behind him. His biographer Walter Niemann later disagreed, calling it “the most passionate, the freshest, and the most deeply inspired by nature” of Brahms’ entire catalog.

Brahms Strings

String quartets by Bartók and Tchaikovsky bookend this program—the visceral and cathartic former contrasting with the latter’s refined lyricism that famously moved the author Leo Tolstoy to tears in a moment Tchaikovsky called one of the proudest of his life. In between, musicians of the LA Phil perform a chamber reduction of the sweeping Prelude and “Liebestod” from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde.
