Gerda and Kay are best friends. But when Kay gets a splinter in his eye, everything suddenly changes. He finds Gerda and his other friends annoying and boring and follows the alluring voice of the icy-beautiful Snow Queen. Gerda sets out to find her friend – and finds herself: In the mysterious and shrill realm of the Flower Queen, at the golden court of a lovesick prince and princess, and in the dangerous and harsh world of the Robber Queen, she learns to stand up for herself and her friends. With the help of the crow and the reindeer, she ultimately discovers her way and, with the true power of friendship – laughter – is able to free Kay from the Snow Queen's cold hands.
