Even as a child, Eddy Bellegueule felt that he would have difficulty living up to the expectations of those around him. His world was a small village in Picardy, northern France, and his upbringing in a working-class family was marked by poverty, violence, and social exclusion. Eddy's perceived feminine behavior made him an outsider long before he discovered his own homosexuality, and the constant rejection from his peers and lack of acceptance from his family weighed heavily on him. Despite the adverse circumstances, Eddy sought ways to escape his surroundings and find his own identity. Édouard Louis's autofictional debut novel tells the story of escaping an oppressive childhood in unsparing, explicit imagery and with almost sociological precision.
