The book tells of the small adventures and discoveries, encounters and insights that shape the life of 11-year-old Lotte and her family in the immediate post-war period. Family life in the old forester's lodge includes the clatter of an old typewriter, the singing of the kitchen maid, the wind and the twittering of birds in the forest - all of which are accompanied by selected works by Leroy Anderson, Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann, Michael Jary and Antonín Dvořák, played by Anette Behr-König and Romeo Ruga (violin), Anke Ohngemach (viola), Karola von Borries (violoncello) and Rose Eickelberg (percussion).
