After a national tour in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, APHC is back on the road, giving fans another chance to witness this iconic piece of American culture. The troupe is pleased to again be taking the stage at the Strathmore Music Center — always a favorite stop. Joining Garrison are music director Rich Dworsky and the band, actors Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and sound-effects wizard Fred Newman, and guest performers too.

Through sung sonnets, witty limericks, and musical jokes, Keillor explores the beauty of aging, finding solace in the simplicity of “less is more.” With a humorous reflection on college days and the realization that people pay for entertainment to escape unhappiness, Keillor shares insights into the joys of growing old gracefully. The performance includes updates from Lake Wobegon, a town bustling with quirky entrepreneurs and enduring traditions like the Living Flag ceremony on Main Street. Audience members join in a spirited a cappella sing-along, harmonizing nostalgic tunes ranging from patriotic songs to pop standards, culminating in a heartfelt rendition of the national anthem, fostering a sense of community and shared memories.

Mr. Keillor’s idea is simple and clear: no matter what vocational track a person pursues, the love of language is at the heart of a sound education and a crucial part of a good life. You don’t need to write a term paper on Chaucer’s The Miller’s Tale to find this; you can do math, graphic design, dance, marketing, etc., but your love of language, e.g. English, will make you happier and more effective.

Garrison Keillor did A Prairie Home Companion for more than forty years, wrote fiction and comedy, and invented a town called Lake Wobegon, where all the children are above average, even though he himself grew up evangelical in a small separatist flock where all the children expected the imminent end of the world. Since the public radio show wrapped up in 2016, author and humorist Keillor has written a memoir and other books, and — in his 80s — has forged a career in stand-up comedy. His biweekly online column can be found on Substack. And his podcast and email newsletter The Writer’s Almanac is sent out daily to internet subscribers (free).
