Antonín Dvořák's Stabat Mater is the musical result of several personal tragedies: in 1875, his joy at his first successes as a composer and his happy family life were shattered by the death of his daughter Josefa, who was only two days old. As a deeply religious person, Dvořák began working on the Stabat Mater to cope with his grief. Then, in 1877, his other two small children died in quick succession. Dvořák then immersed himself in the work again and completed it. With the Stabat Mater, which he himself conducted very often, Dvořák enjoyed enormous success - contrary to his publisher's expectations: "If only the text were different! I mean: for northern Germany and England and America, etc., the 'Stabat Mater' is completely lost. It is only for the Austrian states, that is, for Catholic countries." But the publisher was mistaken...
