The RSO begins the 2025/26 season with passionate rhythms of Spain and Russia. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, a vibrant celebration of Spanish folk music, showcases the colorful range of the orchestra, as the themes dance through the instrument families. Ponce’s Concierto del Sur features the romantic sounds of the classical guitar, performed by returning guest virtuoso Daniel Bolshoy. The concert powerfully concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a sweeping journey of emotion, from its tragic and brooding opening to its triumphant finale.

His efforts in promoting Mexican Music have resulted in appearances at major venues in Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York, Beijing, Oslo, Paris, Lisbon, Río de Janeiro, and Guayaquil, among others.

Passion and Romance – You’ll find them both in the East Texas Symphony Orchestra’s 2024/2025 season opening night concert. Acclaimed pianist Arturo Nieto-Dorantes displays his virtuosic skills with Richard Lee and the ETSO in a performance of the Concierto Romantico by Manuel Ponce, the “father” of Mexican classical music. The concert also features Franz Liszt’s evocative Les Preludes and concludes with the vibrant Symphony No. 7 of Ludwig van Beethoven, which the composer himself thought was one of his best works. This trio of pieces provides a fitting celebration to launch the new season.

Mayuko Kamio had made her concerto debut in Tokyo at the age of ten under the baton of Charles Dutoit, in a concert broadcast on NHK television. Since then, she has appeared as soloist with the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich with Mstislav Rostropovich, NHK Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta.

WMP’s electrifying season finale ‘Music of the Americas’ features a splendid array of music from North, Central and South America. Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón’s (currently based in Brooklyn, New York) work has been described as “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative". Her piece Tornasol (Spanish for sunflower) is a work that focuses on the vibrancy of color and how it changes through scientific experimentation, all portrayed in various sections of the orchestra. In contrast, guest artist Colin Davin will perform Concierto del Sur, a masterpiece for guitar and orchestra by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. The second half of the program includes music that is lively, rhythmic, and exciting. El Salón México by Aaron Copland depicts scenes and imagery from his experience at a popular dance hall in Mexico City. Four Dance Episodes from Alberto Ginastera’s ballet La Estancia incorporates Argentinian folk music that represent dance, character, and settings of life on the ranch. We conclude the program with Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez – a seductive, yet melancholy and irresistible ballroom dance inspired by the Cuban Habanera performed by full orchestra.

Celebrated Mexican composer Manuel Ponce is recognized the world over as a pivotal figure in the revival of classical guitar repertoire. Ponce’s music has found an easy place in modern classical repertoire for its abundant melodies, remarkable technical flourishes, and use of Mexican folk idioms. Working in a sympathetic manner, composers Pablo Borras (Argentina) and Clarice Assad (Brazil) combine musical elements drawn from their respective homelands, finding inspiration in popular musical styles mixed with contemporary compositional techniques. The program is anchored by the panoramic Suite for Two Cellos and Two Guitarras by Mexican composer Samuel Zyman.

Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville, the opening to that most famous comedic opera, uses masterful storytelling and music to bring to life the magic of Spain. Plus, we’re joined by the remarkable pianist and el alma de la fiesta Fabio Witkowski as we embark on a celebración that traverses the heart-pounding rhythms of Márquez’s Conga del Fuego Nuevo and the soul-stirring melodies of Rodríguez’s Mosaico Mexicano. By the end of the night, you’ll have a hard time resisting asking the person next to you, “¿Quieres bailar?”

The TSO is excited to once again be a part of the Consulate of Mexico in Tucson’s Mexican Independence Day Concert! This year’s concert will take place at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall, and will also include a Mexican Fiesta featuring Mexican cuisine and crafts offered by local traditional and small businesses from 5–7:00 p.m. on the plaza.

Concert Tickets are only available directly from the Consulate of Mexico in Tucson. Tickets will be available for pickup at the Consulate September 1–14 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
