Feel the smoldering heat of Jean Sibelius when the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the acclaimed Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen. Then, gold medal-winning violinist Sergey Khachatryan plays the flashy and fiendishly difficult violin concerto by fellow Armenian Aram Khachaturian. The music of the late Romantic period, in particular, shaped the soundscape of Hollywood—partly because many of its great representatives fled Nazi Germany to the American West Coast. Hardly any living film composer stands as closely in this tradition as John Williams, who, in his music for "Star Wars," influenced by Korngold and Stravinsky, brought the Wagnerian concept of leitmotifs to unprecedented popularity—and in doing so, sometimes veers dangerously close to Picasso's maxim that "great artists steal."

Gerade die Musik der Spätromantik prägte die Klangwelt Hollywoods – auch da viele ihrer großen Vertreter vor dem Nationalsozialismus an die amerikanische Westküste geflohen waren. Kaum ein noch lebender Filmkomponist steht so in dieser Tradition wie John Williams, der in seiner durch Korngold und Strawinsky geprägten Musik zu »Star Wars« das wagnerianische Konzept der Leitmotive zu ungeahnter Popularität brachte – und sich dabei mitunter gefährlich nahe an Picassos Motto orientiert, dass »große Künstler stehlen«.

Die »James Bond«-Filme lassen die Unterhaltungsmusik ihrer jeweiligen Entstehungszeit anklingen, während Tōru Takemitsu in seinen »Three Film Scores« die typische Wiener Melange aus Walzerseligkeit und Schwermut aufgreift. Immer wieder fand und findet aber auch klassische Musik ihren Weg in den Film – sei es Schostakowitschs berühmter Walzer Nr. 2 in Stanley Kubricks »Eyes Wide Shut« oder wenn in Francis Ford Coppolas »Apocalypse Now« ein vietnamesisches Dorf zu den Klängen von Wagners »Walkürenritt« bombardiert wird. Das 2. Sinfoniekonzert spürt dieser gegenseitigen Inspiration von Film und Klassik in all ihren Facetten nach.

To kick off the season, the hr Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with the European Central Bank, invites you to the Europa Open Air concert series. In the unique atmosphere on the banks of the Main River in Frankfurt, you can expect another captivating summer concert evening with chief conductor Alain Altinoglu. Up to 20,000 visitors regularly enjoy the hr Symphony Orchestra's summer concerts on the banks of the Main. As always, supported by the Elisabethen Quelle Foundation, this year's program features popular orchestral works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Aram Khachaturian, and Gustav Holst, which have also enjoyed worldwide success in film. In addition, a rousing concerto for two pianos by Francis Poulenc and the renowned "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" by Franz Liszt will be performed. Earlier in the evening, the hr Big Band, featuring Wolfgang Haffner and special guest Shantel, will provide the first musical highlights and create a lively atmosphere on the banks of the Main. Named after the title character in Richard Strauss's opera "Arabella," Steinbacher grew up in a family of musicians and began playing the violin at the age of three. It's hardly surprising, then, that her personal connection to Strauss's music was practically instilled in her from birth. Ultimately, however, Arabella Steinbacher devotes herself to the entire violin repertoire and has been one of the great stars of the string firmament for many years. She performs not only as a soloist but also as a chamber music partner—for example, in a duo with the versatile pianist and arranger Peter von Wienhardt. With dance-like verve and sophisticated arrangements of well-known opera and ballet music, including, of course, music by Strauss, the two musicians present a spirited chamber concert.

On a single whiplash, the door opens to a world of colours and light: Maurice Ravel’s piano concerto in G Major is fascinating from the very first note. Basque folklore, sounds from Spain and southern France, crystalline sparkle, and elegant jazz – musical notes become images, some tender and fluffy, others rich and bright. Ravel’s compatriot, French pianist Bertrand Chamayou, seems completely in his element in this dazzling bravura piece. The other two works are equally sensual to the eye and the ear: In his Ballet Gayaneh, Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian lets the sparks fly, including a fiery sabre dance. Darius Milhaud’s Suite for Violin, Clarinet and Piano was taken from the incidental music he wrote for Jean Anouilh’s 1937 play, Le voyageur sans bagage (The Traveler Without Luggage). The Trio by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian features his characteristic style of composing classical music with folk-inspired rhythms and melodies, all emphasized by colorful instrumentation. This lovely concert features three of the Soviet Era’s greatest composers. We open with four dances from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Gayane, including the justly famous Sabre Dance. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2, a jubilant romp, for his 19-year-old son and piano student, Maxim. Rick Ferguson is our featured soloist.

Russian & Armenian Dances

One of the great chamber works of the 20th Century, Shostakovich’s Quintet for Piano and Strings earned the composer the Soviet Union’s highest honor in the arts, and allowed him to tour for years, playing with the Glazunov Quartet. Award winning pianist Yakov Kasman joins talented musicians of the ASO to perform this beloved work alongside works by Shostakovich’s countrymen that also feature the clarinet
