From myth to fire to consolation, this program traces a journey through passion, virtuosity and reflection. Dorothy Howell’s Lamia opens with a darkly lyrical, evocative story of a nymph and her fate at the hands of a jealous god. In her CSO debut, violinist Alexandra Conunova brings fiery energy and soaring lyricism to Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto, one of the 20th century’s great Romantic concertos. Two choral works by Brahms offer final consolation: Nänie laments the inevitability of death through three episodes from Greek mythology, while Schicksalslied ("Song of Destiny") contrasts the eternal bliss of immortals with the restlessness of human existence.

Almost a family reunion: hr's chief conductor Alain Altinoglu, born in Paris, has Armenian roots. And Sergey Khachatryan, originally from Yerevan, grew up in Frankfurt as one of the greatest violin talents of recent decades. It's only natural that Armenia's most famous composer is also involved, and a bonus that this even results in a small program focus for the hr Symphony Orchestra under the title "Armenian Soul." Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto, composed in 1940, has everything a violinist could wish for: fire, brilliance, the grand cantilena as well as the subtle, yet always perceptible, folkloric touch. And it demands a true virtuoso like Sergey Khachatryan, who says: If he weren't playing the violin, he would have become a race car driver. He always seeks the adrenaline rush, on the podium as well as in life, and he plays every concert with an artistic commitment as if it were his last. Excess: That's also the key word for one of the most famous orchestral works of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." It's ballet music, but not of the lighthearted kind—on the contrary, it's an adoration of the earth, rhythmically pounding, with tremendous sonic power. The premiere in 1913 was dominated by astonishment and tumult—the work still takes your breath away today.

Almost a family reunion: hr principal conductor Alain Altinoglu was born in Paris and has Armenian roots. And Yerevan-born Sergey Khachatryan grew up in Frankfurt as one of the greatest violin talents of recent decades. It is a must that Armenia's best-known composer also comes into play here, and a plus that it even gives rise to a small programme focus for the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under the title ‘Armenian Soul’. Aram Khatchaturian's Violin Concerto, composed in 1940, has everything a violinist could wish for: Fire, brilliance, the great cantilena as well as the light but always perceptible folkloristic touch. And it calls for a true virtuoso like Sergey Khachatryan, who says: ‘If he didn't play the violin, he would have become a racing driver. He is always looking for an adrenaline rush, both on the podium and in life, and he plays every concert with an artistic exertion as if it were his last. Exhaustion: this is also the keyword for one of the most famous orchestral works of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky's ‘Le sacre du printemps’. It is ballet music, but not the airy kind - on the contrary, it is a worship of the earth, rhythmically pounding, with horrendous sound power. Anyone who has ever heard this music will never forget it. "Le Sacre"—many still pronounce the title with a mixture of awe, horror, and fascination. Stravinsky's ballet music is and remains the system-breaker of the standard classical repertoire. If one wanted to describe the music that, just over 100 years ago, triggered what was probably the greatest scandal in music history—it was in Paris in 1913—terms like "orgy," "Black Mass," "High Mass for Rhythm" might come to mind. It is dance music, but for a completely different, dark kind of dance: earthbound, throbbing, sharp-edged, brutal. Where ballet had previously been expected to be as light as a feather, here everything literally bores into the subterranean depths. It is music that continues to overwhelm. And intoxicate. And that one simply never forgets. Back then, at the premiere, there were only a few who understood what event they were witnessing. One of these contemporary witnesses was able to describe it, this "new kind of wildness in both unartistic and artistic forms: all forms devastated, new ones suddenly emerging from the chaos." Alain Altinoglu and the hr-Sinfonieorchester will awaken the primal musical forces of "The Rite of Spring" in this Young People's Concert and unleash them with powerful sound in the Alte Oper.

Once you have heard this music, you will never forget it. Le Sacre' - not a few people pronounce the title with a mixture of awe, horror and fascination. Stravinsky's ballet music is and remains the standard bearer of the classical repertoire. If you wanted to describe the music that caused the biggest scandal in music history in Paris a good 100 years ago, you could use terms like orgy, black mass and high mass for the rhythm. It is dance music, but for a very different, dark kind of dance: earthy, throbbing, sharp-edged, brutal - music that still overwhelms and intoxicates today. At the time of the premiere, few people knew what they were witnessing.

Glinka's second opera, Ruslan and Lyudmila, had a rather long and troubled gestation, also caused by some difficulties that arose in drafting the libretto, in which as many as five people participated. The subject, suggested by the director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, who had staged the opera A Life for the Tsar to great acclaim in 1836 , was based on the epic poem of the same name by Alexander Pushkin, who was unable to work on the libretto due to his premature death on February 10, 1837, following complications from an abdominal wound suffered in a duel. The opera's writing was therefore rather long and troubled, occupying a full five years, from 1837 to 1842, of the composer's life. However, at its premiere, which took place on December 9, 1842, it failed to achieve the same success as his previous opera. Now one of the most popular operas in Russia, Ruslan and Lyudmila , whose plot revolves around the knight Ruslan who, after overcoming several trials, manages to free his fiancée, Princess Lyudmila, previously kidnapped by a sorcerer, draws its musical material from Russian, Finnish, Tatar, and Persian folk repertoire. Extremely concise and far removed from Italianate patterns, the overture , in sonata form, is based on two themes, the first of which, joyful and thunderous, is, as the composer himself testified, most likely inspired by a strange noise made by cutlery during a wedding dinner: “I was outside on the balcony, and the clatter of knives, forks, and plates made such an impression on me that I had the idea of imitating them in the prelude to Ruslan. I later did so with extraordinary success.”

In the first part, Emmanuel Pahud, a flute magician, takes on Khachaturian's Flute Concerto , a virtuoso piece with Armenian overtones. His unique artistry – velvety in the legato, sparkling in the dancing lines – reveals this little-known score where Caucasian folklore and pure virtuosity intertwine. Newly appointed to lead the Liège orchestra, Lionel Bringuier from Nice deploys a direction that is both precise and chiseled. His fluid gesture sculpts each nuance of the Concerto before plunging into the tormented ocean of the Pathétique . Tchaikovsky's ultimate masterpiece, this Symphony No. 6 becomes, under his baton, a path from shadows to light: sensual phrasings from the strings, heart-rending bursts of brass, crowned by this finale that fades into a whisper. A perfect dialogue between the dazzling soloist and a conductor at the height of his art, galvanizing his phalanx.

Joined by Emmanuel Pahud, a virtuoso flautist among the world's finest, the Orchestra and its conductor launched into the formidable passages of Khachaturian's Flute Concerto , a work that is at times dramatic and at times exuberant, in which the composer also reveals his Armenian roots.

Is this a symphony or a punch to the gut? One could say that Khachaturian's music is an exaggeration, an oversized cathedral of sound, built for a world demanding heroism and sacrifice. But perhaps it's the other way around: Perhaps his music sounds so alien today because we've become accustomed to everything having a filter—even the horrific. For while Khachaturian, through direct witnessing, poured war into music, autocracies are regaining strength, eroding democracy.

Classical music and film art: Since the creation of moving pictures, they have repeatedly entered into a productive symbiosis. The music of the late Romantic period, in particular, shaped the soundscape of Hollywood—partly because many of its great representatives fled Nazi Germany to the American West Coast. Hardly any living film composer stands as closely in this tradition as John Williams, who, in his music for "Star Wars," influenced by Korngold and Stravinsky, brought the Wagnerian concept of leitmotifs to unprecedented popularity—and in doing so, sometimes veers dangerously close to Picasso's maxim that "great artists steal."

Named after the title character in Richard Strauss's opera "Arabella," Steinbacher grew up in a family of musicians and began playing the violin at the age of three. It's hardly surprising, then, that her personal connection to Strauss's music was practically instilled in her from birth. Ultimately, however, Arabella Steinbacher devotes herself to the entire violin repertoire and has been one of the great stars of the string firmament for many years. She performs not only as a soloist but also as a chamber music partner—for example, in a duo with the versatile pianist and arranger Peter von Wienhardt. On a single whiplash, the door opens to a world of colours and light: Maurice Ravel’s piano concerto in G Major is fascinating from the very first note. Basque folklore, sounds from Spain and southern France, crystalline sparkle, and elegant jazz – musical notes become images, some tender and fluffy, others rich and bright. Ravel’s compatriot, French pianist Bertrand Chamayou, seems completely in his element in this dazzling bravura piece. The other two works are equally sensual to the eye and the ear: In his Ballet Gayaneh, Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian lets the sparks fly, including a fiery sabre dance.
