This lovely concert features three of the Soviet Era’s greatest composers. We open with four dances from Aram Khachaturian’s ballet Gayane, including the justly famous Sabre Dance. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2, a jubilant romp, for his 19-year-old son and piano student, Maxim. Rick Ferguson is our featured soloist.

One of the great chamber works of the 20th Century, Shostakovich’s Quintet for Piano and Strings earned the composer the Soviet Union’s highest honor in the arts, and allowed him to tour for years, playing with the Glazunov Quartet. Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian crafted his music with strong melodies, rich orchestration, and striking rhythms that bring to mind Rimsky-Korsakov or Mussorgsky. Gustavo Dudamel leads an exploration of Khachaturian’s distinct voice first with a suite from his ballet Spartacus—featuring the stirring Adagio—followed by the intense and heroic Piano Concerto with the help of Jean-Yves Thibaudet. After the U.S. premiere of Thomas Adès’ fanfare honoring Frank Gehry, Dudamel conducts Janáček’s lyrical and intense Sinfonietta.

The lives and music of Dimitri Shostakovich and Aram Khachaturian were unquestionably influenced by their shared sociopolitical climate as composers in the Soviet Union. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, which he called “a response to my critics,” sprang forth during a time of tremendous oppression and conflict, leaving listeners to wonder whether the composition was a triumphant work of patriotism or a hidden note of subversion against the oppression of Stalin.

Armenian-American pianist and CSUN alumna Kariné Poghosyan has been described as an “extraordinary” and “larger than life” musician, whose playing “goes to the heart of the music.” Following a successful performance at Carnegie Hall, she returns to her alma mater with a program rich with music from Armenia’s best-known composer, Aram Khachaturian, including two excerpts from his ballet works and his rarely performed Piano Sonata. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 150th birthday celebration continues with the 1931 re-written version of his Piano Sonata No. 2 played with the audience seated on-stage, just feet away from the piano.
