The Critic

It’s Mascagni’s homage to Rossini and to the Italian opera buffa and commedia dell’arte traditions. It was premiered simultaneously in six Italian opera houses but, apart from Rome, the reception was subdued. While it has often been held that Mascagni was a ‘one opera man’ who could never repeat the success of Cavalleria rusticana, this verdict has already been debunked by Wexford’s four previous Mascagni productions, most recently Guglielmo Ratcliff in 2015.

Le maschere

Composto in poco più di due mesi, Il Barbiere di Siviglia è considerato il capolavoro di Gioachino Rossini. La prima rappresentazione avvenne a Roma nel febbraio 1816 e fu probabilmente per il poco tempo a disposizione che si scelse come soggetto l’ormai consolidata commedia di Beaumarchais, la quale all’epoca era già stata messa in musica ben sei volte. In quest’opera Rossini fa spesso ricorso a materiale musicale già utilizzato in altre opere, ad esempio la sua celebre sinfonia fu scritta prima per l’Aureliano in Palmira e poi presente anche in Elisabetta, regina d’Inghilterra. Il Barbiere di Siviglia non fu da subito apprezzato dal pubblico, ma nel giro di poco tempo divenne simbolo stesso dell’opera buffa e dello stile rossiniano.
La vicenda vede il susseguirsi delle comiche trovate di Figaro, il barbiere e factotum della città, per consentire a Rosina e al Conte d’Almaviva di convolare a nozze a dispetto della volontà di Don Bartolo, tutore della ragazza.
