Rodolfo Halffter's "Tres Epitafios," premiered in 1954, opens the concert evening with three finely crafted choral movements about Don Quixote, Sancho Panza, and Dulcinea. The short "epistolary" is a musical eulogy—not sad, but ironically loving. Halffter portrays Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's literary figures as memory images from a bygone age of the imagination. Richard Strauss also dedicated his 1897 tone poem "Don Quixote" to the "knight of the melancholy countenance"—albeit in a large orchestral format. In the performance, the solo parts are sung by Henriette Lätsch, principal cellist, and Christian Götz, principal viola of the Jena Philharmonic. Between the two works, Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major from 1806 conveys a cheerful, transparent soundscape with a playful character. /JN

Friday Concert No. 1

Unfortunately, the concert cannot take place as planned in St. Michael's Church. Due to a fracture of a vault rib of unknown cause, the church has been closed as a precautionary measure by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jena. The concert will therefore be moved to the Thalbürgel Monastery Church, with the start time postponed to 7:30 p.m. Tickets already purchased remain valid.

In addition to their Advent concerts in Jena and the surrounding area, in Gera and Mühlhausen, the Jena Philharmonic Choir, the Jena Madrigal Circle and the Jena Philharmonic Boys' Choir are inviting you to a joint Advent concert in Jena's St. Michael's Church for the fourth time. Under the motto "O Magnum Mysterium" ("O Great Mystery"), the fourth responsory of the Christmas Matins "In Nativitate Domini" ("For the Birth of the Lord"), both well-known and lesser-known tunes will be heard, which above all give musical expression to the joy of the Christmas season.

As part of the concert series "Boys' Choir meets friends", the Boys' Choir of the Jena Philharmonic regularly invites partner choirs to perform together in order to promote friendships and exchange through singing and social activities. This time the guests are the Uetersen Boys' Choir, a choir association from Schleswig-Holstein founded in 1965, which has developed into one of the most successful boys' choirs in the region thanks to excellent work with young people. Since 2023 the choir has been under the musical direction of Thuringian-born Felix Renner. Works by Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Duruflè, Gounod, Tallis, Elgar, Brahms and Hindemith will be heard, among others. Note: The next concert in the series will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in the city church. The guests will then be the Dresden Boys' Choir under the direction of Matthias Jung.
