Since its premiere in 1893 at the Weimar Court Theater under the direction of Richard Strauss, Engelbert Humperdinck's fairytale opera "Hansel and Gretel" has enjoyed unbroken popularity. Along with Mozart's "Magic Flute," it tops the repertoire statistics and has been almost synonymous with the first family visit to the opera for generations. Its popularity is not only due to its Christmas connection, but also to its quality: the late romantic Humperdinck succeeded in creating a catchy yet artistically valuable version of the material, interwoven with folk songs - some arranged, some newly composed - some of which, like the famous "Evening Blessing," later became folk songs themselves. Under the direction of Clemens Fieguth, the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra is presenting an entertaining concert performance of the opera highlights on the 1st and 2nd days of Christmas.
