Bertil is home alone again because both his parents had to go to work. Suddenly the boy hears small, tripping steps. It is Nils Karlsson, the little Tom Thumb, who actually wants to be called Nisse. He has just moved into a mouse hole in the wall of Bertil's room. Nisse tells Bertil a trick that allows him to become as small as he is. After the size difference has been overcome and Bertil has shrunk to the size of a thumb, they spend the whole day together.
