The final day of The Ring is staged with The Twilight of the Gods . This completes Sir David McVicar's directorial vision, which returns the Ring to its mythical foundations and narrative linearity, rightfully placing it among the benchmarks of the Western canon. Ancient tragedy, Baroque theater, and Elizabethan drama converge in a reading that identifies two episodes of comedy— Rheingold and Siegfried —and two episodes of tragedy, Die Walküre and, above all, Götterdämmerung , which marks the final arrival at catastrophe.

The third episode of the Tetralogy introduces the character of Siegfried, the son of siblings Siegmund and Sieglinde, who grew up in the lair of the treacherous Mime and was called upon to reforge the sword Nothung with which he would slay the dragon Fafner, guardian of the treasure, before freeing Brünnhilde from the spell of fire. A young man unfamiliar with fear, he is the protagonist of a fairytale plot that recurs with the sentiment of Nature and the obstacles to be overcome, culminating in his encounter with the Valkyrie, who renounces her divine nature for him.

Siegfried (Der Ring des Nibelungen)

After ten years, Teatro alla Scala presented a new production of Ring des Nibelungen in the fall of 2024 , conducted by Simone Young and Alexander Soddy, who join the ranks of great maestros such as Toscanini, De Sabata, Krauss, Furtwängler, Cluytens, Muti, and Barenboim. The direction is by David McVicar, one of the most authoritative names on the international stage, who has won acclaim at La Scala in a vast repertoire, from Cavalli to Berlioz, Cilea, and Verdi.

Dive into greatness with Twyla Tharp’s iconically athletic In The Upper Room, Dani Rowe’s heartbreaking The Window, and a world premiere from PNB Company dancers Christopher D’Ariano and Amanda Morgan. A whirl of music, dance, and fog, this collection features custom scores by Philip Glass and Shannon Rugani and will leave you marveling at the skill of PNB Company dancers.

When fairies and mortals cross paths, mayhem is sure to follow. Fairy king Oberon and his wife Tytania are locked in a quarrel when a group of unhappy young lovers wanders into their forest. Oberon dispatches the mischievous sprite Puck to resolve the young lovers’ strife with the help of a magical elixir… but when Puck applies that elixir to the wrong people, chaos erupts across the forest. The young paramours enter a dark and surreal dream world where plans of revenge go hand-in-hand with seduction. Britten’s hypnotizing score sets the perfect atmosphere for this journey into love’s absurdities.

In Dani Rowe’s gorgeously wrought world premiere, 36-year-old Marilyn Monroe looks back at her life and memories through the only lens that matters: her own.

Marilyn features an original score by Shannon Rugani, iconic costumes by Emma Kingsbury, and an arresting set design by Emma Kingsbury and David Finn. This full-length ballet promises powerful storytelling, fusing realism and dreams.

VIOLIN CONCERTO
Originally commissioned and created for our 90th Anniversary, Possokhov’s Violin Concerto reimagines Stravinsky’s celebrated score with a fresh and bold interpretation. Steeped in classical vocabulary that shows off the steely technique of our dancers, it was met with standing ovations and rave reviews as a standout piece of the next@90 festival.

MADCAP
A crowd-pleaser from our next@90 festival, Rowe’s MADCAP was decidedly dubbed a “triumph” by the San Francisco Chronicle. It features Rowe’s love of storytelling and theatrics as she masterfully dissects the anatomy of a clown. Hagström’s eerie, carnival-inspired score transports us into Rowe’s sinister world of the clown after the circus lights go dark.

GATEWAY TO THE SUN
Former SF Ballet Principal Dancer Nicolas Blanc returned to our studios to create this poetic and moving ballet in five movements, set to celebrated contemporary composer Anna Clyne’s exquisite score for cello and orchestra. Blanc models Gateway to the Sun after a poem by 13th-century Sufi mystic Rumi.

This trio of works shines a light on some of the world premieres that PNB’s New Works Initiative has created in recent years. Donald Byrd’s haunting Love and Loss premiered in 2019, Alexei Ratmansky’s stunning tribute to his homeland of Ukraine, Wartime Elegy, followed in 2022, and inventive Australian choreographer Danielle Rowe will create something brand new for PNB dancers this November.
