It was through the unusual line "Do you like ice cream, duck?" that the novelist Simon Roy, at the age of 10, discovered The Shining , Stanley Kubrick's famous film adapted from a novel by Stephen King, in which an aspiring writer becomes the caretaker of an inhospitable hotel. The work became obsessive to him, among other things because it allowed him to absorb the turmoil of his own genealogy, which he claims is macabre. Kubrick's My Red Life , in an astonishing mise en abyme, redraws new lines of meaning.
