Philippe Herreweghe, a grand seigneur of historical performance practice and clever programming, brings a particularly piquant pair of works into conversation in his ProArte concert. On the one hand, there is Ludwig van Beethoven's powerful "Eroica," revolution in music, which, according to legend, was originally dedicated to the revolutionary Napoleon. On the other, there is the haunting Requiem in C minor by Luigi Cherubini, commissioned by King Louis XVIII, who succeeded Napoleon as ruler. What unites the works, however, is the absolute mastery of craftsmanship—and mutual respect—of the two composers: Beethoven even wished that the Requiem in C minor be played at his funeral (which it was).

In the last season the Prague Philharmonia cel ebrated great success with Cherubini’s Requiem No. 1 in C minor. The orchestral evening in March will offer another piece of the composer’s oeuvre, namely that made him famous in Paris at the beginning of the 19th century. The opera Les Abencérages was very popular in its time and its premiere was attended by Napoleon himself. After Napoleon’s fall, however, Cherubini’s music fell into near oblivion and is only now beginning to enjoy a new wave of interest.

As is well known, Beethoven never visited Italy. But his relationship with the land of lemons and music was manifold. He dedicated his 3rd Symphony to Napoleon, the general who was exiled to the island of Elba. The Italophile program ends with Beethoven's "Eroica" - with the Roman-born Riccardo Minasi conducting the Ensemble Resonanz.

The grand opening of the anniversary edition kicks off with the first of three concerts by this year’s Gstaad Conducting Academy: it offers a sneak peek into the creative process of young conductors, who, in their inaugural week, collaborate with a carefully chosen selection from the outstanding Gstaad Festival Orchestra. In a chamber orchestra setting, these accomplished conductors, who emerged victorious among approximately 200 competitors during the application phase, will delve into a varied repertoire featuring excerpts from Beethoven’s symphonies, overtures and the dazzling “Rococo Variations” by Peter Tchaikovsky. The latter will be brought to life by cellist Christopher Jepson, who has been a steadfast soloist with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra since its inception. Make sure not to miss the second part of this week on August 9th at the Saanen Church, where the captivating Menuhin’s Heritage Artist Lucienne Renaudin Vary will grace the stage with her trumpet.

Premiere preludes are a different look at the creator of the opera: a composer creating a great vocal, symphonic and theatrical form, whose personality we want to show from a slightly different side, in a modest, intimate statement in which he addresses his message directly to our feelings and hearts. These concerts are therefore usually solo or chamber, most often in one movement; they gather music lovers and opera lovers, sometimes surprising them and maybe even surprising them with the composer's different face. Touching the subtle matter of the highest quality chamber music is an excellent introduction to the musical aura - and not only - of the premieres that define the program axis of the season.

Having triumphed at the Met in some of the repertory’s fiercest soprano roles, Sondra Radvanovsky opens the new season as the mythic sorceress who will stop at nothing in her quest for vengeance—a tour-de-force role made famous by opera’s ultimate diva, Maria Callas. The Met premiere of Cherubini’s rarely performed masterpiece marks Radvanovsky’s fourth new production with director David McVicar, who also designed the sets for this vivid, atmospheric staging, simultaneously classical, updated, and timeless. Joining Radvanovsky are tenor Matthew Polenzani as Medea’s Argonaut husband, Giasone; soprano Janai Brugger as her rival for his love, Glauce; bass Michele Pertusi as her father, Creonte, the King of Corinth; and mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova as Medea’s confidante, Neris. In an impressive fall trifecta at the Met, Maestro Carlo Rizzi conducts Medea, in addition to Don Carlo and Tosca.

April’s concert programme in the Bethlehem Chapel includes a wide variety of musical works that will attract chamber music lovers and fans of instrumental concerts.  The first part of the concert will feature the Concerto for Bassoon and Chamber Orchestra by the French composer Jean-Michel Jolivet. This will be followed by the Concertino for Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra by the Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni, whose work is characterised by its delicate melodies and sophisticated instrumentation.
