Persian kamancheh master Kayhan Kalhor and the three Dutch jazz musicians of the Rembrandt Trio played their first concert together in 2013 and have been touring worldwide ever since. The musicians formed a deep friendship that led to the album release, It’s Still Autumn.

The album has been lauded for its ability to merge two different cultures to form a surprising harmony and an undefinable new sound. Kayhan Kalhor has been instrumental in popularising Persian music in the West, and the Rembrandt Trio is known for its pioneering work in blending art music from the Middle East with improvised Jazz.

In 2025, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester will be 80 years old – an occasion to round off the 2024/25 season with a concert programme that is far from ordinary. Founded in bombed-out Hamburg in 1945, the ensemble once set an example of humanity and community in a world shattered by war, ideology and cruelty. 80 years later, this message seems more important than ever. Iranian musician Kayhan Kalhor composed his concert »Venus in the Mirror« for »peace and friendship«, which is now being launched in Hamburg.

Join us at the Princeton Public Library to dive into national bestseller The Septembers of Shiraz by Dalia Sofer, a novel set in the aftermath of the Iranian revolution, in context of Princeton University Concerts’ upcoming event with renowned Iranian musician Kayhan Kalhor on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 7:30PM as part of the Healing with Music series. This hybrid in-person and virtual book group will culminate in a keynote event on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at 7PM (EST) on Zoom with award-winning international correspondent for National Public Radio Deborah Amos, whose reporting on the Middle East and refugees in the U.S. is regularly featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, and All Things Considered. Participants of this book club will be automatically registered for the keynote and will have the opportunity to pre-submit their questions to Deborah Amos.

Three-time GRAMMY nominee Kayhan Kalhor is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso on the kamancheh, who through his many musical collaborations has been instrumental in popularizing Persian music in the West. Recognized as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso and leading ambassador of Chinese music, Wu Man has carved out a career as a soloist, educator, and composer giving her lute-like instrument a new role in both traditional and contemporary music. A Guggenheim Fellow and GRAMMY-winning musician, Sandeep Das is one of the leading tabla virtuosos in the world today. Since his debut concert at the age of 17 with legendary sitar player Ravi Shankar, Das has built a prolific international reputation spanning over three decades.

Brooklyn Rider, with its gripping performance style and unquenchable appetite for musical adventure, defines the string quartet as a medium with deep historic roots and endless possibility for invention. This foursome-violinists Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violist Nicholas Cords, and cellist Michael Nicolas-finds equal inspiration in musical languages ranging from late Beethoven to Persian classical music to American roots music to the endlessly varied voices of living composers. A Silk Road Project collaboration introduced Brooklyn Rider to Iranian kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor, beginning a longstanding friendship. Brooklyn Rider and Kalhor released their highly-praised recording Silent City in 2008 and continue to tour this project bridging traditions of Persia and the West. Praised by the LA Times as "a knockout" and by RootsWorld for its "unhurried delicateness...subtle virtuosity and unspoken emotion," Silent City also features bassist Jeff Beecher and percussionist Mark Suter.
