We open with Carlos Simon’s Fate Now Conquers — a powerful, rhythmic overture that ignites the stage with urgency and hope. Then, bask in the lush jazz-inspired brilliance of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, where classical finesse meets big-city swing. Finally, surrender to the unstoppable vitality of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, a work so full of life, it famously moved audiences to dance.

The outstanding pianist Artina McCain joins Orchestra Nova NW in an inaugural concert highlighting the long-overlooked contributions of Black composers and artists to classical music. Music Director, Steven Byess has curated an exquisite program featuring work by Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker, Florence Price — the first black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra – and Ghanaian-American composer Fred Onovwerosuoke. Passionate and dynamic, this concert brings into focus an essential thread in the fabric of American music.

Celebrating the legacy of African American music from one generation to the next, this concert is inspired by the long-time St. Mark United Methodist Church organist and music director Charles Kendrick (1929-2020). The concert will feature world-renowned artists including Kendrick's grandson, bass trombonist Martin McCain; commissioned works by the McCain Duo; distinguished worship minister Dr. Leo Davis; and introducing new compositions by rising star Joshua David Davis. Curated by the award-winning pianist, Artina McCain and Martin McCain.

Musical Journalism: Continuing a Legacy through the Flute.
This is a concert inspired by Adam W. Sadberry’s late grandfather and unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement, L. Alex Wilson. Wilson’s work as an editor and journalist changed the world through covering pivotal Civil Rights events including the lynching of Emmett Till, the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the desegregation of Central High School by the Little Rock 9, the last of which played a part in Wilson’s transformation into a martyr. In this concert, Adam intertwines articles that he collected from the archives of the Tri-State Defender, Wilson’s newspaper in Memphis, TN, with music and dance that contextualizes the humanity and inhumanity of the stories.

This extraordinary program presents a work of the powerful, contemporary voice of composer Carlos Simon, whose works resonate with history, hope, and heart. Pianist Artina McCain returns to perform George Gershwin’s brilliant Piano Concerto in F, a work that blends classical traditions with the bold rhythms of jazz and pulses with energy, romance, and the unmistakable spirit of the American Jazz Age. The program closes with Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: Dream of America, a poignant and inspiring tribute to the immigrants who shaped the American story. Innovative in its format, the work brings elements of the theater and multimedia into the concert hall, employing actors and projected historical images from the Ellis Island archives. The spoken texts for the work come from the Ellis Island Oral History Project, an historic collection of interviews with actual immigrants about their experiences emigrating to America. This dynamic work reminds us of the hopes, struggles, and dreams that built a nation.
