Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) wrote his Messa di Gloria very early in his career – in fact before he really had a career. He composed the mass in 1876 and he was just 18 years old. Puccini was born into a musical family. For generations his family occupied the post of the organist and chapel master at the Duomo San Martino in his home town Lucca. This was also his destiny since he started his musical education as a boy soprano in the church choir of San Martino. However, something significant had happened to him the year before he composed his mass. He went to the theatre in Pisa (about 20 km from Lucca) and saw his first opera: Verdi’s Aida. From this moment on it was clear for Puccini that he wanted to become a composer of operas. He wanted to write for the theatre and not for the church.

Experience the raw passion and haunting power of Light Opera of New Jersey’s production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, a tragic tale of love, betrayal, and revenge. This timeless masterpiece follows the tormented court jester whose desperate attempts to protect his daughter unleash devastating consequences. Featuring a traditional stage production, soaring melodies, and gripping drama, Rigoletto is opera at its most thrilling. Featuring a renowned cast, and the orchestra and chorus of the Light Opera of New Jersey under the direction of Maestro Jason Tramm.

H.M.S. Pinafore is a comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan, satirizing the British class system. It’s filled with catchy tunes, clever lyrics, and a humorous plot. It follows the story of a naval captain’s daughter who falls in love with a lower-class sailor, despite her father’s plans to marry her off to the First Lord of the Admiralty. It’s a delightful mix of love, mistaken identity, and social commentary, all set to catchy tunes.

Its lighthearted humor and engaging story make it suitable for audiences of all ages.
