Every Handel opera promises to be dazzling. With Riccardo Primo , baroque bel canto shines brightly, with the great Richard the Lionheart in the title role, conquering Cyprus… and coming to the rescue of the beautiful Costanza.

Storm, shipwreck, misunderstandings, armed siege and happy ending  : in 1727, Riccardo Primo , re d'Inghilterra celebrates both the new King George II and Handel's recent naturalization. At London's King's Theatre, the greatest opera seria singers are gathered to perform a score of sublime, virtuosic or languid pages: the two sopranos Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni, famous rivals whose onstage squabbles the public eagerly anticipates… and the celebrated castrato Senesino, in a role of rare difficulty (Riccardo).

begin to doubt God. In His rage, He sends a plague of snakes. What can help now? Johann Adolf Hasse expresses the whole range of human emotions in his music to Serpentes ignei in deserto: Anger, fear, hope, confidence. The ensemble Les Accents, founded by baroque violinist Thibault Noally, delights audiences with its fresh and unconventional style of music-making, and is regarded as a leading ensemble on the early music scene. The ensemble has rediscovered this striking oratorio by Dresden court conductor Hasse.

A best-of of Les Indes galantes ? You dreamed of it… and Rameau knew it: he himself concocted this version, stripped of recitatives, giving pride of place to arias, ensembles, choruses, and ballets. “Four grand concerts” that make up one!
