Our Artist in Residence Janine Jansen loves chamber music – because the musicians grow together, develop a shared understanding of sound, and come closer to one another in a special way. “Trust not only creates a feeling of security,” says the violinist, “but also the possibility to take risks.” Together with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the pianist Sunwook Kim, she performs Johannes Brahms’s late-Romantic Trio in E-flat major, in which the composer combines the violin with two of his favourite instruments: horn and piano. Bound to the same era’s ideal of sound is George Enescu’s String Octet, a monumental work full of intimate moments and grand symphonic gestures.

Easter Festival Salzburg Tugan Sokhiev conducts Berlioz’ “Symphonie fantastique”

Great Festival House

Obsessive, passionate, rapturous – Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique takes the drama of unrequited love to new extremes. In gaudy colours, he portrays contrasting scenes and emotions: infatuation, a swirling ball, painful doubts, then a murder and execution, and finally, a bizarre witches’ sabbath. Johannes Brahms’ Double Concerto provides a sharp contrast, with its classical clarity and emotional depth. Under the baton of Tugan Sokhiev, the two solo voices are performed by our First Concertmaster, Noah Bendix-Balgley, and our First Principal Cello, Bruno Delepelaire.

‘With desire and passion,’ wrote Tchaikovsky on the score of his Fifth Symphony. From its stirring opening to its triumphant finale, this is music that comes straight from the heart and speaks straight to the heart. Thomas Søndergård won’t hold back today, and he welcomes not one but two charismatic soloists – cellist Bruno Delepelaire and violinist Noah Bendix-Balgley – to play a masterpiece inspired by friendship: Brahms’ nostalgic, intensely emotional Double Concerto.

What would films like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones or Harry Potter be without his extraordinary music? John Williams, superstar of American film music, gave all these blockbusters their unmistakable sound. His soundtracks provide so much more than catchy tunes; they lend depth and nuance to both stories and characters. In 2021, John Williams made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker, leading the audience through the cosmos of his work. This season brings a new opportunity to hear him conduct his own music: a major event, not just for film fans.

Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is his most popular – not least for its famed Adagietto, a musical declaration of love to Alma, his future wife. The work traverses contrasting emotional worlds: sorrow and optimism, existential fear and zest for life, doubt and tenderness. On the podium is Iván Fischer, one of the leading Mahler interpreters of our time, celebrated for performances that combine transparency with emotional depth. The evening opens with Joseph Haydn’s Sinfonia concertante, in which four members of the Berliner Philharmoniker enter into a virtuosic dialogue with the orchestra – charming, lively, and full of wit.
