Our Artist in Residence Janine Jansen loves chamber music – because the musicians grow together, develop a shared understanding of sound, and come closer to one another in a special way. “Trust not only creates a feeling of security,” says the violinist, “but also the possibility to take risks.” Together with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the pianist Sunwook Kim, she performs Johannes Brahms’s late-Romantic Trio in E-flat major, in which the composer combines the violin with two of his favourite instruments: horn and piano. Bound to the same era’s ideal of sound is George Enescu’s String Octet, a monumental work full of intimate moments and grand symphonic gestures.

Peter’s grandfather lives with many animals near the forest. A wolf lives there too, and he has his eye on Peter’s animal friends. But the clever boy knows how to protect them – the fluttering bird, the waddling duck, the stealthy cat… and each animal has its own melody. Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf is perhaps the best-known musical fairy-tale. Author and narrator Tilman Birr brings the story to the stage in a new version, while the music brings the characters to life and introduces the instruments of the orchestra. Also involved: a foley artist who provides crackling suspense, fluttering wings, and the menacing growl of the wolf.

The Pangaea Trio Berlin takes its name from the supercontinent where all the earth’s continents were once joined – a fitting symbol of the international and multicultural backgrounds of its members. The programme for this concert is just as diverse: Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich was only 16 years old and experiencing his first love when he composed his tender and dreamy Piano Trio No. 1. In Maurice Ravel’s Piano Trio, French elegance meets pulsating Basque rhythms. Johannes Brahms’s Piano Quintet, finally, is a classic of late German Romanticism – dark, contemplative, and dramatic.

In the popular chamber music series “Workshop.Dialogue.Music”, musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker introducing themselves and their instruments, and talking in a relaxed atmosphere about the works presented, their interpretation and their approach. Questions and a dialogue with the audience are very welcome! A new feature is that visitors can enjoy a French breakfast from 11:00 onwards, before the concert begins at 11:30. Breakfast is included in the ticket price.

Artist in Residence Seong-Jin Cho and members of the Berliner Philharmoniker unfold a panorama of Hungarian musical styles in this concert. Johannes Brahms was often inspired by Hungarian music in his works, for instance in the finale of his clarinet trio, which oscillates between deep emotion and serenity. The trio for violin, horn and piano, which the Hungarian György Ligeti wrote in homage to Brahms, is characterised by folk rhythms. The piano quintet by the young Béla Bartók, who would go on to revolutionise Hungarian music, is still very much rooted in the Romantic period. But even here – according to Seong-Jin Cho – you can sense “Bartók's musical future”.

Kyiv Symphony Orchestra

It’s a marvelous tradition: when the Berliner Philharmoniker come to Baden-Baden, they bring along not only great symphonic works, but also chamber music. Ensembles featuring members of the orchestra perform throughout the city. A wonderful opportunity to rediscover Baden-Baden musically – in unusual places and with expressive sounds.
