Go behind the scenes with flautist Dietmar Wiesner as he leads a masterclass with Royal College of Music students.

A founding member and flautist of the Ensemble Modern, Dietmar Wiesner has worked with the most important contemporary composers of this age. He appears regularly as soloist with orchestras including the SWR Symphony Orchestra, and in 2009 he performed the world premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage’s Five views of a mouth with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Also a composer, he has created works across various genres, including the radio chamber opera Haus aus Stimmen which won the German Critics Award.

In Schwedlerstrasse, the creation of new music becomes physically palpable. "Why We Play" gives the audience a sense of the motivations and personal struggles of the musicians and composers who breathe life into this organism. The passion of an ensemble that rehearses around 70 new works each year. A film that makes music not only audible, but tangible as a profound human experience and a collective endeavor.
