Our Artist in Residence Janine Jansen loves chamber music – because the musicians grow together, develop a shared understanding of sound, and come closer to one another in a special way. “Trust not only creates a feeling of security,” says the violinist, “but also the possibility to take risks.” Together with members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the pianist Sunwook Kim, she performs Johannes Brahms’s late-Romantic Trio in E-flat major, in which the composer combines the violin with two of his favourite instruments: horn and piano. Bound to the same era’s ideal of sound is George Enescu’s String Octet, a monumental work full of intimate moments and grand symphonic gestures.

Late Night Concert II: “Borderline experiences”

They are an unlikely duo: the idealistic Don Quixote and his pragmatic servant Sancho Pansa. Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel of the knight, Richard Strauss captures the pair’s absurd adventures in his symphonic poem Don Quixote with sensitity and humour; his sound effects include windmill blades in battle, and a tramping herd of sheep. To open the concert, Daniel Harding conducts Richard Wagner’s festive Tannhäuser overture and Hans Werner Henze’s orchestral work Barcarola, which portrays the transition from life to death with sombre sounds.

Gentle drizzling, vigorous splashing, thunderous drumming – rain comes in many guises. Hanns Eisler’s 1941 film score Fourteen Ways to Describe Rain was one of his best chamber music works. Today, in the face of accelerating climate change, weather patterns take on a whole new urgency. Inspired by Eisler, Gregor Mayrhofer explores these phenomena in his composition Tipping Points. Fourteen ways to describe climate change, a commissioned work which will be premiered as part of our Biennale, explores pivotal moments for our climate. The physicist and science journalist Harald Lesch will host this dialogue concert.
