Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra oboist and former member of the Merseyside Youth Orchestra, Ruth Davies, takes to the stage as soloist for Cimarosa’s Oboe Concerto alongside the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. In the first half, Youth Academy Orchestra perform in a specially arranged version of Dvořák’s Symphony No.9.

Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, “an arresting artist who in concert creates unique aural landscapes” (Los Angeles Times), in his Symphony Center Presents debut, intersperses Mozart’s keyboard works with music by four contemporaries: Haydn, C.P.E. Bach, Cimarosa and Galuppi. The program includes Liszt’s sublime transcription of Mozart’s Ave verum corpus.

In his Gran Partita for 13 instruments, Mozart achieves a sublime combination of grandeur, complexity and sunny charm. CSO Concertmaster Robert Chen presents the composer’s stately and rustic Violin Concerto No. 4, a product of his Salzburg years. Riccardo Muti opens the concert with Cimarosa’s overture, which echoes Mozart’s comic vein and abounds in freshness and invention.

Too few compositions from the German, Baroque composer, Johann Christoph Förster, have survived, but this lovely Concerto in Eb for Horn and Strings, in the Italian style, is to be enjoyed, and features the natural horn.  The Italian Classical composer, Domenica Cimarosa, was a master of the Opera Buffa, and this mischief and wit is discernable in his Concerto for Two Flutes and Orchestra.  The 19th century Czech Romantic composer, Antonin Dvorák, celebrated the folk melodies of his native Moravia and Bohemia, in the cultural celebration of National Romanticism in his “Czech Suite” Op.39.
