Drummer and composer Quincy Davis brings his poignant work Empathy Suite to Dizzy’s Club. The events surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the tragic loss of George Floyd inspired Davis to create a piece reflecting the power of compassion and empathy. Featuring innovative melodies and powerful lyrics, Empathy Suite captures different facets of empathy, drawing inspiration from Maya Angelou, Kobe Bryant, Lao Tzu, the Dalai Lama, and other icons. This performance is made possible through grant funding from the University of North Texas Initiative for the Advancement of the Arts.

Dizzy’s Club proudly presents Ted Nash’s bi-monthly residency featuring his hard swinging big band. Known for his boundless creativity as an arranger and performer, Nash leads multiple innovative projects while touring as a core member of the JLCO. His residency continues with Jazz Meets Pop , bonding pivotal film scores, musical theater selections, and iconic pop bands with “the improvisational spirit and sophistication of jazz.” Expect an evening of brilliant interactivity and a thrilling sense of spontaneity.

Acclaimed pianist/composer and 2021 Guggenheim Fellow Helen Sung presents Quartet+, her latest release on Sunnyside Records. Having lived much of her life at the intersection of different worlds — classical and jazz, and as the American-born daughter of Chinese immigrants — her desire to harmonize these worlds with joy and humanity is at the heart of Quartet+, which celebrates women’s artistry and their music. Vividly blending the jazz and classical worlds, Quartet+ takes the listener on a ride through musical time and space with new original compositions by Helen as well as her arrangements of works by landmark women including Geri Allen, Mary Lou Williams, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carla Bley, and Marian McPartland.

SFCM is proud to partner with SFJAZZ in performances featuring students from the Roots, Jazz and American Music (RJAM) program with RJAM faculty. The stellar faculty cast includes the SFJAZZ Collective's Warren Wolf, David Sanchez, Edward Simon, and Matt Brewer, along with luminaries Joshua Redman,  Matt Wilson, and many others. The performance takes place at the SFJAZZ Center as part of the organization’s Thelonious Monk Festival; tickets can be purchased through the SFJAZZ box office

Founded by SFJAZZ in 2004, the SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star ensemble and composer’s workshop that represents what’s happening now in jazz. Since the beginning, the Collective’s mission has been to perform newly commissioned pieces by each member and fresh arrangements of works by modern masters. This year’s Collective performances in Miner Auditorium will take place in November, but this special week in the Joe Henderson Lab to help kick off the 2023-24 Season brings the group together with a decidedly different approach.
