This week delivers an acoustic riot of color conjured by the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The “fiery young sensation” (ArtsATL) Gemma New returns as guest conductor for Gustav Holst’s off-world delight The Planets. Based on astrology, this irresistible concert suite enchanted audiences at its 1918 debut and has inspired spin-offs ever since, from church singing to Star Wars. Also, on the concert, planet Earth makes a dazzling appearance alongside the ASO percussion section in Salina Fisher’s beautifully atmospheric opener Rainphase. And Adam Schoenberg makes a plea for planetary healing in his 2019 piece Losing Earth, which explores the world’s oldest musical instruments (after the voice) with ASO Principal Percussionist Joseph Petrasek.

Three witches, three muses, three little pigs: The “rule of 3” suggests that humans find groupings of three more satisfying and meaningful than other number combinations. A Far Cry puts that theory to the test with a program of string trios. This sensuous assortment of 20th and 21st century works highlights the intimate and intensely collaborative nature of the genre.

Violinist Arabella Steinbacher takes on Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, beloved for its brilliant virtuosity and finesse. R. Strauss’ early tone poem Aus Italien evokes the charm of Italy, at last receiving its Seattle Symphony debut. Tianyi Lu conducts fellow New Zealander Salina Fisher’s Tupaia, inspired by the Polynesian navigator who aided James Cook’s Pacific voyage.

The Marmen Quarter has won a glittering array of international prizes; its musicians are rigorous and deeply humane performers. Charting hundreds of years string writing, their concert begins with Beethoven’s ‘Serioso’ String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, followed by the vivid folk-inspired motifs of the Third Quartet No. 11 in F minor, followed by the vivid folk-inspired motifs of the Third Quartet by Hungarian composer Belà Bartók.

The NAC Orchestra is delighted to welcome New Zealand guest conductor Gemma New, who makes her NACO debut with this performance. New brings composer Salina Fisher’s beautiful composition Kintsugi to life and showcases three superlative female artists. Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing treasured objects with gold lacquer so that cracks and scars become a beautiful reflection of battles won. Salina’s piece draws a musical parallel, celebrating the restorative power of music and art.

According to Māori tradition, Papatūānuku is the Earth Mother, from which all living things are created. In this concert we celebrate nature with Papatūānuku, a work co-created by Kiwi composer Salina Fisher and Grammy Award-winning taonga puoro artist Jerome Kavanagh.
