Centered on the ideas of redemption, recovery, and resilience, this Classical Connections program takes its inspiration from the Japanese art of kintsugi: repairing broken pottery with gold and other beautiful materials – highlighting, rather than hiding, an object’s brokenness, and making the repair itself a thing of beauty.

Desolate and contemplating suicide because of the inevitable advance of his deafness, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote that his destiny to create art alone would keep him alive. Written at the same time as his struggle with depression, Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus (Creatures of Prometheus) is an epic battle between darkness and light. Beethoven emerged from his darkness to create transcendent works of beauty and humanity, in spite of – or perhaps because of – his struggles.

Beethoven composed his Second Symphony in 1802 during a stay in Heiligenstadt, and at that time his hearing loss was becoming a serious problem. At the same time, he wrote the personal document Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he describes his inner struggle with his deafness and the desperation he felt that his musical career might be over. He even considered suicide, but decided to continue both living and working. Symphony No. 2 thus reflects the decision to fight on. The music is filled with energy and optimism – a work that radiates vitality, joy and determination. In this way, the symphony is both a result of his suffering and a sign of his indomitable spirit that refused to give up.

Shifting Ground weaves together pieces for solo violin and violin/electronics by J.S. Bach and composers of other eras to form a program with dramatic arc, flow, and scope. Violinist Alexi Kenney's creative forces are combined with new media artist Xuan in an immersive multidisciplinary program that joins solo violin works from the 18th to 21st centuries with boundary-pushing projection art. Music by J.S. Bach and Nicola Matteis flows seamlessly into works by new voices such as Rafiq Bhatia and Angélica Negrón, as Xuan conjures immersive, imaginative landscapes in response.

This program juxtaposes one of the grandest Viennese waltzes with an atmospheric work by contemporary New Zealand composer Salina Fisher. The program concludes with The Trout Quintet – named for its fourth movement, a variation on Schubert’s earlier work Die Forelle, or “The Trout,” and uniquely known for its melodic nature and an emphasis on the highest register of the piano.

The Marmen Quarter has won a glittering array of international prizes; its musicians are rigorous and deeply humane performers. Charting hundreds of years string writing, their concert begins with Beethoven’s ‘Serioso’ String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, followed by the vivid folk-inspired motifs of the Third Quartet No. 11 in F minor, followed by the vivid folk-inspired motifs of the Third Quartet by Hungarian composer Belà Bartók.

This week delivers an acoustic riot of color conjured by the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The “fiery young sensation” (ArtsATL) Gemma New returns as guest conductor for Gustav Holst’s off-world delight The Planets. Based on astrology, this irresistible concert suite enchanted audiences at its 1918 debut and has inspired spin-offs ever since, from church singing to Star Wars. Also, on the concert, planet Earth makes a dazzling appearance alongside the ASO percussion section in Salina Fisher’s beautifully atmospheric opener Rainphase. And Adam Schoenberg makes a plea for planetary healing in his 2019 piece Losing Earth, which explores the world’s oldest musical instruments (after the voice) with ASO Principal Percussionist Joseph Petrasek.

A Far Cry puts that theory to the test with a program of string trios. Tianyi Lu conducts fellow New Zealander Salina Fisher’s Tupaia, inspired by the Polynesian navigator who aided James Cook’s Pacific voyage.
