Trio Seoul was founded in 2022 by Bienen School associate professor of violin Jinjoo Cho, pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, and cellist and Bienen alumnus Brannon Cho. All three are top prize winners and laureates of prestigious international competitions including the Concours musical international de Montréal, the Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Piano Competition, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The trio regularly collaborates with artists in multiple fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists, and its members have appeared as soloists with celebrated orchestras throughout the world. The city of Seoul serves as a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots and artistic intensity.

The second subscription concert of the Orchestral Series will combine the latest music with works by masters of earlier periods. Oscar Jockel will perform the demanding, but historically traditional dual role of composer-conductor.

Despite his young age, he has managed to captivate audiences, critics, as well as the world’s leading conductors. He has been conducting assistant to Kirill Petrenko, the Chief Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, and demonstrated his professional qualities with the Prague Philharmonia in the past.

The exceptional young instrumentalists of the Kronberg Academy perform with one of the academy’s renowned professors: violist Tabea Zimmermann, recently appointed chair of the Hindemith Foundation. Brahms’s Clarinet Trio, here performed by viola, piano, and cello, is one of the composer’s transcendent final works and a mainstay of the chamber music repertoire. Hindemith was a gifted violist as well as a highly innovative composer, and his fourth string quartet—a work of great contrasts—is arguably his most popular (though still a rare treat in concert). Korngold’s Piano Quintet is a lavish and idiosyncratic early work, composed at the height of his popularity in Germany.

Formed in 2022, TRIO SEOUL’s founding members, violinist Jinjoo Cho, Cellist Brannon Cho, and Pianist Kyu Yeon Kim, are winners and laureates of more than 20 international competitions and awards combined. The ensemble was formed with a mission to combine forces between three members who all identify as the 21st-century musician, actively performing in the world’s greatest concert halls while presenting creative projects in collaboration with artists of various fields, including composers, choreographers, writers, and visual artists. The city of Seoul is a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots as well as artistic intensity.

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Shulamit Ran was in residence at Marlboro Music in 2018 and worked extensively on her music with these musicians in Vermont. Alternating between contemplation and ecstasy, Ran’s Moon Songs for soprano, flute, cello, and piano are at the center of this program, which includes Mozart’s Divertimento, a singular work that achieves “something special in the way of art, invention, and good spirits.”
