The wind quintet has the challenge, as well as the benefit, of bringing together five distinct instruments to explore multiple blends of timbres. Klughardt's work is a beautiful example of great writing for each of the five, and the addition of piano in Louise Farenc's Sextet provides expanded sonic dimensions and is a true tour de force for the pianist. The program is balanced with smaller combinations featuring double reeds, the regal sound of the horn, and upper winds.

This chamber music concert is a celebration of musical textures featuring the number three. It was inspired by Thomas Adès’ Sonata with its unusual instrumentation of oboe, horn, and harpsichord that combines a contemporary style with French Baroque flair. Adès wrote this work as an homage to Claude Debussy, thus providing the perfect link to Debussy’s exuberant and extremely popular Sonata. In between the two works, Franco Donatoni’s Small II lends a striking contrast. After an intense first half, the second half of the concert features more “classical” trios, so to speak, that are connected through the use of the piano. Unusually, however, these were written by the rarely performed composers Charles Koechlin, August Klughardt, and Eugène Goossens. These works are distinguished by profound, lavish, and distinct melodies that allow each instrument to showcase its vocal qualities.

Brahms lived most of his life in Vienna, but had roots in Hamburg – and perhaps that is precisely why his music also carries a fundamental tone of Nordic weight and reflection.

"Laurel sounds, part two. And again, old and new, familiar and rediscovered, are mixed together. Instruments begin to sing, transforming into Mozart's Papageno, Konstanze and Tamino. We meet the American Charles Martin Loeffler, born in Berlin in 1861, whose compositions mainly contain traces of Debussy, Franck and Chausson, but also a little Eastern European folk music. We marvel at the late romantic reed songs of Wagner fan August Klughardt, in which a lot of Fauré can be heard. And we discover Dora Pejačević, daughter of a Croatian count and a Hungarian baroness: a composer who later lived mainly in Dresden and Munich and whose style is close to that of Rachmaninoff. Finally, we also get to know the cellist and composer Alfredo Piatti, who lived in London for a long time and for whom Mendelssohn - so it is said - wanted to write a cello concerto. This never happened; this was probably not due to Piatti, who only died in 1901 at the age of 79.

Each season, the hr-Symphony Orchestra's chamber concerts make a stop at the Hohhaus Concerts in Lauterbach – this time with a musical program that ignites the imagination. Robert Schumann's famous "Fairy Tale Narratives" are, of course, a must. But the "Phantasy Quartet" by the British composer Benjamin Britten, the early piano quartet movement by the late Romantic composer Gustav Mahler, and chamber music miniatures by August Klughardt and Paul Juon also contribute to the magical atmosphere.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan Academy regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

Klughardt wrote his Schilflieder (Reed Songs) in the Romantic spirit of Franz Liszt. Clara Schumann was the most famous woman pianist of her century and a highly gifted composer. Her charming style displays interesting rhythms and fresh modulations.
