Our Family Concert is always a favorite – this time we’re performing Peter and the Wolf, narrated by the always-charismatic Omari Tau.  It’s a great way to introduce kids (and grown-ups!) to the instruments of the orchestra.  We’ll also hear from this year’s Young Artists Grand Prize winner, Sumanth Ganga, performing Creston’s Sonata for Alto Saxophone and we’ll perform Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances No. 8, Op. 46.

Bernstein’s music from West Side Story burns with the intensity and romance of his urban retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Creston’s Fantasy for Trombone showcases the expressive power of the Spokane Symphony’s own John Church. The evening’s finale, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, will leave the audience thrilled and breathless.

Join us for what promises to be a masterful performance of Rachmaninoff’s most celebrated, intensely impassioned Second Piano Concerto composed during the turn of the century.  “Melody is the music and the foundation of all music,” said Rachmaninoff. During one of his tours in the United States, he noted what still holds true today, “These Americans cannot get enough of it.”

Join us for an evening of exceptional saxophone music at the Northwestern Bienen School of Music. Philip Kleutgens, a Master of Music student under the tutelage of Taimur Sullivan, will be performing a captivating recital on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT. The event will take place in the intimate setting of the McClintock Choral and Recital Room, located within the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts.

Philip will be joined by a talented ensemble of musicians, including Isaac Boone on soprano saxophone, Yun Qu Tan on alto saxophone, Brian Kachur on tenor saxophone, Natalia Warthen on baritone saxophone, and Nathan Canfield on piano. The program promises a diverse range of pieces, featuring works by Sam Alvarez, John Anthony Lennon, and Paul Creston, as well as transcriptions by Philip Kleutgens himself, including selections from Nino Rota's Concerto for Strings and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Souvenir d’un lieu cher.

Tchaikovsky confessed that he had put “his whole soul” into his final symphony, and for the listener, it’s an enthralling experience that awakens us to a universe of emotion. Music Director Juraj Valčuha leads this poignant masterpiece, known for its haunting ending that fades to black. A special program celebrating the legacy of former Houston Symphony Chief Conductor Sir John Barbirolli also includes Paul Creston’s Dance Overture and Prokofiev’s lyrical Violin Concerto No. 1, with Houston favorite Augustin Hadelich.
